Alex Hedrick of TMWC/USOPTC, Karlee Brooks of EAP win Grand View Open titles

Two women’s freestyle athletes who train regularly at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center (USOPTC) in Colorado Springs, Colo. won gold medals in the Grand View Open in Des Moines, Iowa today.

High school star Karlee Brooks of Arizona (123), who is with Elite Accelerator Program, and Alex Hedrick of the Titan Mercury WC/USOPTC (130) were among the champions.

Brooks was dominant, with three technical falls and a pin competing against older athletes. Included was a 10-0 technical fall in the finals over Emily Paulino (Midland University.,

USA Wrestling’s Elite Accelerator Program (EAP) is designed to develop young athletes with Olympic potential at the USOPTC.

Hedrick was also in command of all five of her matches, with four technical falls and a decision. In the finals, she scored a 12-1 technical fall over Louisa Schwab of Menlo College. Her closest bout was a 5-0 semifinal win over Oklahoma high school star Bella Williams.

Hedrick was a 2022 U23 World bronze medalist, a 2021 U.S. Open champion and a past Senior National Team member.

The other USOPTC athletes in the draw also placed in the tournament, with unattached Katja Osteen of California winning a bronze medal at 191 pounds, and EAP wrestler Genesis Cejudo of Arizona placing sixth at 109.

Osteen lost her first match 3-2 to Jaycee Foeller of the University of Iowa, who is currently ranked No. 3 in the NCAA. Osteen ran off six straight wins to get a bronze medal, including a pin of Andjela Prijovic of Grand View in 4:41. Her run included three tech falls, two pins and a forfeit.

Osteen, a two-time NCWWC All-American at Simon Fraser, has been a multiple USA Wrestling age-group All-American as well.

Cejudo won her first match, then fell in the next three bouts to place sixth.

The Grand View Open is one of the largest and most respected college Open wrestling tournaments. Grand View is currently ranked No. 4 in the NAIA in women’s wrestling. Teams from the NAIA, NCAA and NJCAA have traditionally competed in this event, as well as Senior-level athletes and top high school stars.
