AMMAN, Jordan – 2023 U17 World champion Jordyn Raney of the United States won three matches by technical fall to power into the 60 kg Greco-Roman semifinals at the 2024 U17 World Championships on Tuesday morning.

Raney opened with a crisp 9-0 technical fall over Ziming Ding of China, who was fifth in the Asian U17 Championships. After getting put on top to lead 1-0 after Ding is hit with passivity, Raney hit four straight gut wrenches for a technical fall in 1:19 seconds.

In his second match, Raney won a dominant 8-0 technical fall over Bende Olasz of Hungary. Raney led 2-0 at the break on a passivity point and a step out. In the second period, a takedown made it 4-0. Late in the match, Olasz tried a throw, Raney caught him and body locked him for four points and the technical fall with 11 seconds left.

Raney won a wild, high-scoring semifinals match against 2024 European U17 silver medalist Aleks Margaryan of Armenia, 17-8. Raney blocked a throw and almost pinned Margaryan, going up 6-0 early. Margaryan got on top and lifted and threw Raney consecutively, taking an 8-6 lead. Raney powered back with a takedown and two turns for a 12-8 lead. He added another takedown and two turns for a 16-8 technical fall. An Armenian challenge was denied giving Raney another point.

In the semifinals, Jordyn Raney will battle 2024 European U17 champion Aykhan Javadov of Azerbaijan. The session will begin at 5:15 p.m. local time (which is 10:15 a.m. U.S. Eastern time). The Group 2 semifinals will be followed with the Group 1 medal matches at 6:00 p.m. local time, when Jordyn Raney’s twin brother Jayden Raney will battle Alpamys Bolatuly of Kazakhstan in the 55 kg gold-medal finals.

Two other U.S. wrestlers reached the quarterfinals and were defeated, 2022 U17 World freestyle champion Domenic Munaretto at 51 kg and Loc Webber at 45 kg. Both will need the opponent who defeated them to win in the semifinals for them to get pulled back into Wednesday’s repechage.

Munaretto won his first match with a clutch 5-5 criteria decision over U17 European bronze medalist Maksut Sultanov of Ukraine. Sultanov led 1-0 when Munaretto was hit for passivity, then added two gut wrenches for a 5-0 lead. Munaretto got a head pinch, which he turned twice to close it to 5-4 at the break. In the second period, Sultanov was hit for passivity to make it 5-5 and put Munaretto up on criteria. There was no more scoring.

In his quarterfinals match, Munaretto lost by a 9-0 technical fall to Turan Dashdamirov of Azerbaijan, a 2023 U17 World champion and two-time U17 European champion. After Munaretto was hit for passivity to trail 1-0, Dashdamirov hit two consecutive four-point lift and throws to add eight points and secure the win.

Webber was dominant in his opening match, an 11-1 technical fall over Toi Nishimura of Japan. Webber led 1-0 after Nishimura hit for passivity, then hit two gut wrenches to lead 5-0 at the break. In the second period, after going down for passivity, Webber got a reversal, then added two gut wrenches for a 10-1 win. A Japanese challenge was denied, adding one more point.

In the quarterfinals, Webber was defeated in an 8-0 first-period technical fall by 2024 Asian U17 champion Umidjon Karomov of Uzbekistan.

Also still possible for repechage is Joseph Jeter at 71 kg. Jeter was defeated in his opening match by U17 European bronze medalist Vladislav Byrlia, 7-2. Byrlia scored all of his points in the first period, with a passivity point, followed by two takedown and turn exchanges. Jeter scored twice in the second period but could not close the gap.

Byrlia won his quarterfinals match and needs a semifinal victory to get Jeter into repechage.

At 92 kg, Evan McGuire was defeated in his first match by injury default after Individual Neutral Athlete Kanstantsin Kasyan threw him out of bounds for four points. McGuire was injured and could not continue. Kasyan lost his next match, making McGuire ineligible for repechage.
