AMMAN, Jordan – The Greco-Roman brackets have been released for the 2024 U17 World Championships, which begin tomorrow in Amman, Jordan. 10 Americans will take the mats in search of a prestigious age-group World medal.
Two past U17 World champions highlight a talented U.S. Greco-Roman roster. Jordyn Raney returns after topping the podium last summer in Istanbul, Turkey. Domenic Munaretto takes aim at a Greco-Roman title after winning the 2022 U17 Worlds in freestyle. Both men have challenging matches to open the event.
Raney, who was the 55 kg champion a year ago, bumps up to 60 kg in Amman. His journey to repeat begins with Ziming Ding of China, who wrestled for a medal at the U17 Asian Championships, finishing in fifth place. A win pushes Raney into a round-of-16 match with Bende Olasz of Hungary.
Munaretto, a product of St. Charles, Ill., opens his day at 51 kg against U17 European bronze medalist Maksut Sultanov of Ukraine. The winner advances to a potential quarterfinal contest against returning U17 World champion and two-time U17 European champion Turan Dashdamirov of Azerbaijan.
Three other Americans are booked against continental medalists in round one. Jayden Raney, Jordyn’s twin brother, draws U17 Asian champion Sardor Kholmurzaev of Uzbekistan at 55 kg. Hayden Schwab, the son of 2008 Olympian Doug Schwab, opens against U17 Asian bronze medalist Yedige Toleutayev of Kazakhstan at 48 kg. Joseph Jeter will see Individual Neutral Athlete Vladislav Byrlia, a U17 European bronze medalist, at 71 kg.
There is a possibility the U.S. draws a fourth continental medalist as an opener. At 65 kg, Colton Weiler awaits the winner between U17 African champion Mohamed Ibrahim of Egypt and Mongolia’s Borgil Tuvshinbaatar.
The Greco-Roman portion of the U17 World Championships will be held Aug. 19-21. Women’s freestyle and men’s freestyle will follow later in the week. Greco-Roman action begins at 10:30 a.m. local time each day. Amman, Jordan, is located seven hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Time.
The U.S. will compete in two groups over the course of the Greco-Roman event. Group one, which starts on Aug. 19, is comprised of Jayden Raney, Weiler, Schwab, Emmitt Sherlock at 80 kg and Trayvn Boger at 110 kg. Group two starts a day later, featuring Munaretto, Jordyn Raney, Jeter, Loc Webber at 45 kg and Evan McGuire at 92 kg.
Initial opponents for each U.S. wrestler can be found below. A full set of brackets and match-by-match results is available on UWW Arena. A live broadcast of the event is available for the U.S. market at FloWrestling.com.
