Women’s College Opens from this past weekend: 12 tourneys kick off the women’s college season

Each week as appropriate, USA Wrestling will post the results from women’s college open tournaments from the weekend. Here is this week’s report includes 12 different open tournaments, held all across the nation, featuring athletes from the NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA, other college organizations, as well as Senior-level and high school athletes.

Menlo Open (at Menlo)

Sunday, Nov. 5

Notes: Six of the top 10 ranked teams in the NAIA came together for this loaded competition, which had champions from six different tournaments. NAIA No. 1 Menlo won the team race with 180 points, followed by NAIA No. 6 and defending NAIA champion Southern Oregon with 158.5 points and NAIA No. 2 Life with 158 points. Southern Oregon had the most individual champions with three: Emma Baertlein (109), Carolina Moreno (130) and Caitlyn Davis (155). Menlo had a pair of champions, Kalila Shrive (170) and Tavia Heidelberg-Tillotson (191).  NAIA No. 4 University of Providence also had two champions, Erin Hikiji (101) and Waipuilani Estrella-Beauchamp (136). Other champions were Life’s Ariana Martinez (116), Camille Fournier of NAIA No. 9 Texas Wesleyan (123), Faith Wooley of NJCAA No. 3 Umpqua CC (235), plus unattached Jamilah McBryde (143), who is on Life’s roster.

The tournament had a large field, featuring teams from the NAIA, NCAA and NJCAA. Champions came from eight different college programs. The nation’s top high school program, Wyoming Seminary, finished third with 26 points with host East Stroudsburg, No. 7 in the NCAA in fourth with 19 points. King had the most individual champions with four,  Mia Zuniga (105), Virginia Foard (123), Maria Victoria Baez Dilone (130) and Claire Dicugno (136). The two teams tied in the NCAA rankings at No. 8, Iowa and Lock Haven, were entered in this event, which had a large variety of college varsity programs, club teams, RTCs and high school wrestlers entered. Iowa was dominant with six champions, Emilie Gonzalez (101),  Ava Bayless (109), Brianna Gonzalez (116), Felicity Taylor (123), Haley Ward (170) and Alivia White (191). Lock Haven’s individual champion was Stella Steigler (155). Marisol Nugent of the Sunkist Kids, who wrestles at North Carolina, was the 143 champion, while Maya Letona of NYCRTC, a Columbia student, won it at 143. Canadian Senior wrestler Alex Town of London WWC was the 130-pound champion.
