Upsets and absences contributed to a shake-up in the team standings in this week’s edition of the Trackwrestling Division I Rankings presented by Resilite.
Top-ranked Iowa added to its projected NCAA advancement and placement point total with Michigan and Penn State continuing to hold down the No. 2 and 3 spots in the team race, but the rest of the top 20 got shuffled up after a weekend featuring more than 600 individual matches.
Oklahoma State and Nebraska traded places with the Cowboys taking over at No. 4 and Missouri inched closer to the top 10, while Rutgers and Iowa State tumbled after key performers were removed from the rankings for inactivity.
Rutgers sophomore Sammy Alvarez checked into the 133-pound at No. 6, replacing previously top-ranked teammate Nick Suriano, who has not been with the Scarlet Knights in January. Oklahoma State sophomore Daton Fix takes over the No. 1 spot at 133.
Additionally, Iowa State’s Jarrett Degen and Sammy Colbray, who are expected to be out until February, were also removed from the rankings. The Cyclones dropped five notches to No. 19 in the team standings.
Iowa continues to hold a massive lead with 143.5 projected NCAA advancement and placement points. Michigan is second with 90, followed by Penn State (67.5), Oklahoma State (57.5) and Nebraska (52).
On the individual front, North Carolina State freshman Isaac Trumble debuted at No. 13 at 197 after posting a win Friday against then-No. 8 Nino Bonaccorsi of Pittsburgh.
Wisconsin sophomore Eric Barnett moved up eight notches to No. 20 at 125 after pinning then-No. 2 Devin Schroder of Purdue.
The rankings, which are linked below, do not include wrestlers from conferences and schools that have stated plans not to compete during the 2021 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Trackwrestling team rankings are based strictly on the number of advancement and placement points each squad would accumulate if its wrestlers finished in those ranking slots at the NCAA Championships. Top-ranked wrestlers earn 20 points, followed by 16 for second, 13.5 for third, 12.5 for fourth, 10 for fifth, 9 for sixth, 6.5 for seventh, 5.5 for eighth, 2 for spots 9-12, 1.5 for spots 13-16 and 1 for 17-25. Team dual outcomes are not factored into the team rankings.
The Trackwrestling rankings include 33 wrestlers at each weight class, representing the number of wrestlers who qualify for the NCAA Championships.
