Four wrestlers who replaced ranked teammates are included in newest WIN Div. I rankings

by Mike Finn, WIN Magazine

NEWTON, Iowa — As the calendar turns to February and NCAA Division I programs are solidifying their line-ups for the postseason, four wrestlers have replaced ranked teammates for now in WIN’s rankings and are among 15 newcomers in WIN’s Feb. 1 Top-20 listing.

The four guys who replaced ranked teammates are: Northern Iowa’s Kyle Biscoglia (15th at 133), NC State’s Ryan Jack (18th at 133), Stanford’s Requir Van der Merwe (16th at 157) and Penn State’s Seth Nevills (11th at heavyweight). Meanwhile, the weight class with the most new wrestlers is 133 pounds, where Northwestern’s Chris Cannon (14th) and Air Force’s Jared Van Vleet (19th) appear for the first time in WIN’s weekly rankings.

Individuals making the biggest jumps in their weight class were NC State’s Jakob Camacho (from sixth to third at 125) and Northern Iowa’s Parker Keckeisen, who moved from No. 13 to No. 7 at 184 pounds.

In the team rankings, Iowa remains No. 1 in both the dual rankings (3-0, after beating Illinois) and WIN’s Tournament Power Index, which tallies potential NCAA points from ranked wrestlers and how team may finish in the 2021 NCAA Division I Championships in March. With a wrestler ranked at all 10 weight classes, including nine in the Top 8 of their weight classes, the Hawkeyes lead the TPI field with 134 points.

Michigan, which is expected to come to an end of a 14-day pause of activities on Feb. 7, remains ranked No. 2 in WIN’s TPI with 85.5 points and No. 3 in WIN’s dual rankings. Oklahoma State (67.5) and Penn State (56.5) are ranked third and fourth in the TPI and join NC State and Missouri with nine ranked wrestlers.

The following is a breakdown of how the TPI is determined by WIN’s rankings: 20 for 1st, 16 for 2nd, 13.5 for 3rd, 12.5 for 4th, 10 for 5th, 9 for 6th, 6.5 for 7th and 5.5 for 8th. Wrestlers ranked 9-12 earn two points each, followed by 1.5 points for wrestlers ranked 13-16 and 1 point for those ranked 17-20.
