Match of the Day: Carr and Deakin split matches at Senior Nationals
by USA Wrestling
Going into the 2020 NCAA Tournament, Northwestern’s Ryan Deakin earned the top seed at 157 while Iowa State’s David Carr was seeded third. The pair wrestled once during the season, with Deakin coming away with a 9-3 victory.
Obviously, the pair never got a chance for a rematch with the NCAA tournament being cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in October, the pair met twice at the 2020 Senior Nationals, first in the quarterfinals and then in the fifth-place match at 74 kg.
While both wrestlers are tremendous in Folkstyle, they also excel in freestyle. Deakin is currently No. 2 on the National Team at 70 kg and is a 2017 Junior World silver medalist. Carr is a 2019 Junior World champion and a 2016 Cadet World bronze medalist.
