Bethlehem, Pa. – The 116th EIWA Championship is underway at the Stabler Arena at Lehigh University. Session one featured pigtail matches and the first round of championship action.
One of the first upsets of the day occurred at 125 pounds, where 13th seeded Antonio Mininno of Drexel knocked off No. 3 seed Michael Colaiocco of Penn. Colaiocco, who is ranked No. 14 by Flowrestling, was leading, 5-2, in the second period when Mininno rolled through his shot, putting him to his back and picking up the fall. 125 pounds is one of the deepest weight classes in the EIWA with 7 NCAA bids available.
One of the most compelling quarterfinal matches scheduled to occur next session is Princeton’s Matt Kolodzik taking on Navy’s Jared Prince. Kolodzik is a three-time All-American while Prince is a three-time NCAA qualifier who finished in the round of 12 last year.
Kolodzik was pulled out of an Olympic redshirt in early February and held a 10-0 record coming into the tournament. Prince also missed the majority of the season and had a 3-1 record with only one match coming at 149 pounds (the other three were at 157). Even with the lack of matches, the pair earned the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds respectively. The two have met at each of the last three EIWA Championships with Kolodzik winning in 2017 and 2018 and Prince winning in 2019.
With only four automatic qualifier spots available at this weight class, the competition will be tight.
Of note at 157 pounds, Anthony Artalona of Penn, who was No. 4 in the pre-seeds, did not enter the tournament. Artalona was the 149 pound EIWA champion last season. Penn is being represented at the weight class by John Errico.
Currently, Lehigh sits in first place with 22 points followed by Army with 17.5 points and Cornell with 15.5 points,
Action will resume at 6 p.m. EST and can be streamed live on Flowrestling.
