Bethlehem, Pa. - The fourth meeting between Princeton’s Matt Kolodzik and Navy’s Jared Prince did not disappoint the fans inside the Stabler Arena at the EIWA Championships. Kolodzik, who held the 2-1 advantage in the series, was able to avenge a, 5-4, semifinal defeat he suffered to Prince in the 2019 EIWA semifinals with a sudden victory win, 6-4.
Going into the third period, Kolodzik led, 2-1, on the strength of a double leg takedown. He quickly scored a reversal to take a, 4-1, lead. Prince earned an escape to cut the lead to 4-2. Staying aggressive in neutral, Prince forced two stalling points to send the match into overtime. In the sudden victory period, Kolodzik only needed five seconds to convert on a double leg and earn the victory.
12 wrestlers who made the semifinals earned automatic berths to the NCAA tournament. Those wrestlers competed in the 125 pound bracket, where seven spots were up for grabs, the 165 pound bracket where six spots were available and the 197 pound bracket which also had six automatic qualifier spots. If these wrestler miss weight tomorrow or receive a flagrant misconduct, they will lose their bid.
The upsets kept coming in the 125 pound bracket. Joe Manchio, the No. 7 seed from Columbia, punched his ticket to the NCAA tournament in style when he stuck Lehigh’s No. 2 seed Brandon Paetzell with a spladle. Paetzell is ranked No. 5 in the country by Flowrestling.
In the semifinals, Manchio will face Cornell’s Dominic LaJoie, the No. 11 seed. In the opening round, LaJoie defeated No. 6 seed Logan Treaster of Navy, 4-2. He followed it up with a, 4-3, quarterfinal win in the second tiebreaker period over No. 14 seed Antonio Mininno of Drexel. Mininno pinned No. 3 seed Michael Colaiocco of Penn in the opening round.
On the other side of the bracket, No. 1 seed Pat Glory earned an NCAA berth with a 15-2 major decision over Hofstra’s No. 9 seed Dylan Ryder. Army’s Trey Chalifoux was the fourth wrestler in the 125 pound bracket to claim a bid, advancing to the semifinals with a, 3-2, decision over American’s No. 5 seed Gage Curry. Chalifoux was seeded fourth.
In the 141 pound bracket, the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds went down. No. 8 seed Anthony Sparacio of Binghamton knocked off top seeded Sal Profaci of American, 8-6. On the other side of the bracket, No. 7 seed Ryan Pomrinca of Lehigh defeated No. 2 seed Doug Zapf of Penn, 4-3.
The top four seeds at 165 points advanced through the bracket and earned their NCAA berths. In the semifinals, No. 1 Tanner Skidgel of Navy will take on No. 4 Cael McCormick of Army and No. 2 Philip Conigliaro of Harvard will see No. 3 Zachary Hartman of Bucknell.
At 197 pounds, No, 6 seed J.T. Brown of Army defeated No. 3 seed Jake Jakobsen of Lehigh in sudden victory, 4-2, to earn his NCAA bid. In the other half of the bracket, No. 5 seed Drew Phipps of Bucknell took out No. 4 seed Jacob Koser of Navy, 9-3 to claim his bid. Brown will see No. 2 seed Ben Darmstadt of Cornell in the semifinals while Phipps will take on top seed Pat Brucki of Princeton. Darmstadt cruised through the quarterfinals with a fall over Penn’s Cole Urbas in 1:28. Brucki was also dominant, earning a, 16-3, major decision over Drexel’s Bryan McLaughlin.
The semifinals will begin tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. and can be streamed live on Flowrestling.
