Gap between No. 1 Iowa and No. 2 Penn State widens in Trackwrestling Div. I tournament rankings
by Andy Hamilton, Trackwrestling
The gap between top-ranked Iowa and the No. 2 Nittany Lions swelled to nearly 60 points and Minnesota sophomore Gable Steveson moved up a notch to replace Cassar at the top of the heavyweight rankings.
Coming off a pair of Big Ten road shutouts against Indiana and Purdue, the Hawkeyes gained more ground over the rest of the pack. Iowa is up to a season-high 142 projected placement and advancement points for the NCAA Championships.
Cassar’s injury dropped Penn State back to 83.5 points. The Nittany Lions are followed Ohio State (59), Arizona State (53), Minnesota (51.5), Wisconsin (51), Northwestern (47.5), Purdue (40.5), Princeton (39.5) and Nebraska (38).
The Trackwrestling team rankings are based strictly on the number of advancement and placement points each squad would accumulate if its wrestlers finished in those ranking slots at the NCAA Championships. Top-ranked wrestlers earn 20 points, followed by 16 for second, 13.5 for third, 12.5 for fourth, 10 for fifth, 9 for sixth, 6.5 for seventh, 5.5 for eighth, 2 for spots 9-12, 1.5 for spots 13-16 and 1 for 17-25. Team dual outcomes are not factored into the team rankings.
The Trackwrestling rankings go out to 33, representing the number of wrestlers who will qualify for the NCAA Championships at each weight class.
The rankings are coordinated by David Mirikitani and Mark Ostrander.
