The last regular-season set of Trackwrestling Division I Rankings presented by Resilite has arrived — and the team standings look a lot like the past 12 weeks.
There’s Iowa way out in front. There’s Penn State and Ohio State in the next tier. And there’s everybody else jockeying to wrestle into trophy contention at next month’s NCAA Championships in Minneapolis.
The top-ranked Hawkeyes check in this week at 136 projected NCAA placement and advancement points. Iowa gained ground at 149 — Pat Lugo moved up two spots to No. 2 after pinning Oklahoma State’s Boo Lewallen — and 197 but gave some points back at 157 after Kaleb Young lost Sunday night against Cowboy Wyatt Sheets and dropped to No. 6.
Penn State remains No. 2 with 82 points and Ohio State is third with 71. The pack behind the top three remains in flux.
Arizona State held onto the No. 4 spot with suspended two-time NCAA champion Zahid Valencia remaining on top of the 184-pound rankings until the length of his suspension becomes clear. The Sun Devils are at 53 points.
Princeton (48.5) surged this week up to a season-high at No. 5 when three-time All-American Matthew Kolodzik climbed up to No. 4 in the latest shuffling of the 149-pound rankings.
Minnesota (46.5) checks in this week at No. 6 with 46.5 points.
Wisconsin (43.5) dropped two spots to No. 7 after Tristan Moran tumbled from fifth to 11th after losing last week to Northern Iowa’s Michael Blockhaus.
Northwestern (40.5), Nebraska (40) and North Carolina State (36.5) and Oklahoma State (36.5) round out the top 10.
The Trackwrestling team rankings are based strictly on the number of advancement and placement points each squad would accumulate if its wrestlers finished in those ranking slots at the NCAA Championships. Top-ranked wrestlers earn 20 points, followed by 16 for second, 13.5 for third, 12.5 for fourth, 10 for fifth, 9 for sixth, 6.5 for seventh, 5.5 for eighth, 2 for spots 9-12, 1.5 for spots 13-16 and 1 for 17-25. Team dual outcomes are not factored into the team rankings.
The Trackwrestling rankings go out to 33, representing the number of wrestlers who will qualify for the NCAA Championships at each weight class.
The rankings are coordinated by David Mirikitani and Mark Ostrander.
