Philadelphia, Pa. – A Keystone State rivalry is set to renew as the University of Pennsylvania wrestling team will engage in a home-and-home dual meet series with Penn State starting this season.

The Quakers will first make a trip to Happy Valley, visiting the Nittany Lions on December 8 at 1 p.m. in Rec Hall. The two teams will then reconvene in The Palestra during the 2020-21 season on a date to be determined.

“We’re excited to once again compete against Penn State in dual meets,” said head coach Roger Reina. “Our two programs have long had a tremendous respect for each other on and off the mat, and are committed to showcasing high-level collegiate wrestling in the state of Pennsylvania. We’ve enjoyed hosting Penn State recently at the Keystone Classic and now, we get to take our efforts to two historic wrestling venues and test ourselves in dual meet competition. We are aiming big as a program, and there is no bigger test of where we are and where we are headed than stepping on the mat against the program which has won eight of the last nine national championships.”

The Quakers and Nittany Lions have met 23 previous times in dual meets dating back to the first in 1912. While the Nittany Lions controlled the beginnings of the series with wins in the first 16 duals, in the more recent duals, the Quakers have won three of the last seven meets in the series.

The most recent dual between Penn and Penn State was in 2009, when the No. 25-ranked Quakers knocked off No. 24 Penn State in Rec Hall, 20-13. The Red and Blue won six of ten bouts including the final three in a row to rally from a 13-10 deficit after 174 pounds. Highlight wins for the Quakers in the dual meet were from No. 11 Rollie Peterkin – who knocked off No. 13 Brad Pataky, 12-4, at 125 pounds – and Rick Rappo – who scored a 6-0 win over eventual four-time All-American and national champion Frank Molinaro at 141 pounds.

In 1999 and 2003, the Quakers picked up wins over Penn State in The Palestra, giving Penn a 2-1 record against the Nittany Lions in The Palestra since 1999.
