Kelly, Beauperthuy, Tado, Anderson win Veterans Grappling No-Gi World titles in Azerbaijan

BAKU, Azerbaijan – All four U.S. entries in the No-Gi competition at the Veterans World Championships won gold medals on Friday.
Two U.S. athletes won World gold medals in the Veterans 41-45 year old division, Michael Kelly of Hebron, Ill. at 84 kg and Gabe Beauperthuy of Colorado Springs, Colo. at Over 100 kg.
Kelly won his semifinal match over Zaur Ashumov of Azerbaijan, 3-1. With just 15 seconds left on the clock, he secured an inside single leg to score the winning two points. In the gold-medal finals, Kelly scored a 2-0 decision over Zaur Mehdiyev of Azerbaijan.
Kelly is an eight-time Senior World medalist in Grappling. This is his second Veterans World gold medal in No-Gi Grappling, to go along with a 2016 Veterans World title.
Beauperthuy defeated Manuel Basco Martinez of Spain, 2-2 in overtime in his gold-medal match.
Beauperthuy has now won seven Veterans World Grappling gold medals. He claimed gold medals in both styles the previous three years (2016, 2017, 2018). Beauperthuy has also represented the USA at the Senior Grappling Worlds in the past.
Capturing World gold medals in the Veterans 51-55 year old division were Rich Tado of Fox River Grove, Ill. at 77 kg and Jeff Anderson of Zeeland, Mich. at 92 kg.
Tado won his gold medal with a submission against Yerik Kandaza of Kazakhstan, securing a NorthSouth choke to end the match.
Tado is one of the top Grappling referees in the world and serves on USA Wrestling’s ad-hoc Associated Styles Committee.
Anderson won his gold-medal match over Khasambek Iusupov of Russia, 5-2.
Anderson now boasts four Veterans World Grappling gold medals, winning both styles in 2017 and claiming a Gi gold medal in 2018. Anderson has also competed on the USA Senior Grappling World Team
All four U.S. athletes will participate in the Gi competition on Saturday. Anderson is scheduled to jump to 100 kg in the Gi tournament, while the other three are expected to stay in the same weight class in Gi.
