Cornell finishes atop NWCA Mid-Major Top 20

Manheim, Pennsylvania – Cornell University on the strength of a 13-3 regular season finished the year ranked first in the NWCA Mid-Major Poll for the 2018-19 season released on Tuesday. Formulated two years ago, the Mid-Major Top 20 concentrates on the programs that fall outside of the traditional “Power 5” conferences.
Cornell which finished second in the poll a year ago, retained the top spot earning all six first-place votes. Wyoming and Northern Iowa, which both compete in the Big 12 for wrestling, finished the regular season coming in at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. The Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association took the next two spots in the top five with Princeton finishing fourth and Lehigh fifth. Lehigh rebounded from an 0-7 start to win nine of its next 11 duals to finish with a 9-9 mark.
Buffalo moved into the top ten in the final poll at No. 9, while the biggest mover in the poll was American, which moved into the poll at No. 14.
The EIWA led all conferences with seven teams in the top 20 including five in the top ten with three teams representing the Patriot League in their all-sports conference. Lock Haven, which competes in Division I wrestling in the Eastern Wrestling League, was also the lone lone PSAC school represented.
