NEWTON, Iowa — Coming off big upsets last weekend, Pitt’s Micky Phillippi and Iowa’s Austin DeSanto continue to make the 133-pound weight class the most competitive as each made big jumps in WIN’s Jan. 21 Rankings, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.

Phillipi, a redshirt freshman, defeated Oklahoma State’s second-ranked Daton Fix last Saturday to move up four spots to No. 2 in WIN’s rankings at 133. Meanwhile, DeSanto, a sophomore transfer from Drexel, moved up four spots to No. 5 after the Hawkeye knocked off Rutgers’ third-ranked Nick Suriano last Friday in a home dual.

Defending NCAA team champ Penn State has the top spot in both WIN’s Tournament Power Index (122 TPI points) and Dual-Team Rankings (7-0). The Nittany Lions feature nine ranked wrestlers, including seven in the Top 8 of their weight classes and four top-ranked wrestlers. One of their top-ranked returning champs is 157-pounder Jason Nolf, who defeated Nebraska’s No. 2-ranked Tyler Berger on Sunday.

Ohio State (7-0) remained No. 2 in both rankings in the TPI (6 in the Top 8 and 87 points) and dual rankings.
Iowa (8-0) took over the No. 3 spot in WIN’s TPI with seven wrestlers in the Top 8 and 82.5 points. Oklahoma State (70.5 TPI points) is rated No. 4, followed by Michigan (66.5).

WIN’s Tournament Power Index (TPI) awards team points for individuals ranked in the respective weight classes based on how many potential All-Americans each school could produce at the 2019 NCAA Championships, March 21-23, in Pittsburgh, Pa.

WIN’s TPI point totals are broken down by the following individual rankings: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.
