CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — The fourth dual of the year between No. 5 Campbellsville and No. 7 University of the Cumberlands came down to the final two matches of the night but the Lady Tigers evened the season record with a 27-20 win on Wednesday.
Cumberlands claimed the Mid-South Conference regular season title but the Lady Tigers got the best of them tonight, capping it off with a pin by No. 8 Kenya Sloan over No. 16 Payton Rigert in the 170-pound match to seal the victory.
The Lady Tigers were out-pinned tonight, 3-2, but a forfeit at 101 and three tech falls gave CU much needed bonus points.
After Kaitlin Barnett picked up a forfeit win to give CU a 5-0 lead, No. 2 McKayla Campbell earned a 12-1 tech fall over 13th-ranked Jessica Rodriguez. At 116 pounds, it was Madison Angelito picking up an upset win over seventh-ranked Mia Rodriguez with a late first-period pin.
But then the Lady Tigers won the next three matches. Three-time All-American Koral Sugiyama took down Ashley Tobe with ease at 123 before Andribeth Rivera, a 2017 national champion at 130 pounds, dominated No. 8 Ashley Ikner at 130 pounds.
Sophia Carson then brought the crowd to its feet with a 10-0 tech fall over Samantha Croker and giving Campbellsville a comfortable 22-7 lead. That comfort didn't last long, though. Cumberlands rallied at 143 and 155.
No. 3 Kellyann Jimenez pinned 10th-ranked Lilly Binion-Ferrell to cut the lead to 22-12 and No. 2 Anna Naylor pinned No. 4 Alexia Foca to bring the score within five, 22-17.
Then it was freshman Kenya Sloan sealing the win at 170. She pinned Rigert in 1:10 giving the Lady Tigers a 10-point, 27-17, lead heading into the final match.
Seventh-ranked Jesse Kirby did knockoff No. 3 Alexandra Castillo with a 6-0 decision late.
The Lady Tigers also recognized its five seniors after successful careers - Courtney Gray, Lindsey Prozanski, Maria Ramos, Koral Sugiyama and Raquel Valderrama.
Campbellsville will now have a few days to prepare for the King University Tornado Open this weekend in Bristol, Tennessee. The Lady Tigers do return home on Tuesday, Jan. 29 to host Life University.
