Lewis pins nation’s No. 2 wrestler and defending camp to win at 174 to help Mizzou to the 30-12 win
TEMPE, Ariz. – Fifth-ranked Mizzou Wrestling improved to a perfect 15-0 with a 30-12 win over Arizona State Friday night (Feb. 8) in Tempe. Mizzou improved its winning streak to 35 consecutive duals and dating back to 2014, Mizzou has won 72 of its last 73 duals. Mizzou picked up pins at 133, 141, 174 and heavyweight.
The highlight of the night came at 174 pounds as senior Daniel Lewis pinned the nation's No. 2 wrestler – reigning National Champion Zahid Valencia – in 4:15, extending Mizzou's lead to 21-9. It was Lewis' 11th pin of the year and 47th in his career, second-most in program history. Mizzou won nine of 10 bouts Friday
After Mizzou dropped an OT bout at 125 to open the dual, senior 133-pounder John Erneste got things started with a first-period fall, pinning No. 25 Josiah Kline with seven seconds remaining in the initial frame. It was his eight fall of the season and 30th in his career.
At 141, junior Jaydin Eierman made it to back-to-back pins for Mizzou, his 12th of the season. He pinned freshman Navonte Demison in just 1:52 to extend Mizzou's lead to 12-3. True freshman Brock Mauller made it three straight wins for Mizzou as he earned hard-fought 8-6 win over Josh Macura, extending Mizzou's lead to 15-3. Mauller improved to 24-1 during his true freshman campaign.
In top-25 matchups at 157 and 165, Mizzou came up on the wrong end of a pair of decisions, as Arizona State closed the lead to 15-9. That set up the top-five bout at 174, with Lewis earning his 11th pin of the season.
Mizzou closed the dual with a 6-2 decision at 197 from Wyatt Koelling and heavyweight Zach Elam earned his fourth pin of the season to seal the win, needing just 1:29 to do so.
