The first major milepost of the college wrestling season created ripples that shook up the latest edition of the Trackwrestling Division I Rankings presented by Resilite.
The Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational contributed to changes near the top of several individual weight classes. The results in Vegas — coupled with the removal from the rankings of several notable standouts who have yet to compete this season — triggered more movement in the team race.
Top-ranked Iowa stretched its lead over No. 2 Penn State. Northwestern and Purdue surged into the top 10, replacing Iowa State and Minnesota.
The Hawkeyes check in this week with 138 projected advancement and placement points for the NCAA Championships. Penn State is second with 94, followed by Ohio State (62.5), Wisconsin (52.5), Arizona State (52), Northwestern (50.5), Nebraska (43), Northern Iowa (42.5), North Carolina State (41.5) and Oklahoma State and Purdue in a tie for 10th with 41.
Northwestern climbed eight spots, thanks in large part to junior Ryan Deakin, who vaulted up to No. 1 at 157 after posting victories against North Carolina State’s Hayden Hidlay and Iowa State’s David Carr — the top two wrestlers in the rankings last week — on his way to a title in Las Vegas.
Missouri’s Brock Mauller also debuts this week at No. 1 at 149. He inherits the top spot from North Carolina’s Austin O’Connor, who has yet to compete this season.
O’Conner, Iowa State’s Austin Gomez (133), Illinois’ Michael Carr (149), Oklahoma State’s Joe Smith (174), Penn State’s Shakur Rasheed (184), Fresno State’s Josh Hokit (197), North Carolina State’s Nick Reenan (197) and Minnesota’s Gable Steveson (285) were among the wrestlers who were pulled from the rankings this week due to inactivity.
The Trackwrestling team rankings are based strictly on the number of advancement and placement points each squad would accumulate if its wrestlers finished in those ranking slots at the NCAA Championships. Top-ranked wrestlers earn 20 points, followed by 16 for second, 13.5 for third, 12.5 for fourth, 10 for fifth, 9 for sixth, 6.5 for seventh, 5.5 for eighth, 2 for spots 9-12, 1.5 for spots 13-16 and 1 for 17-25. Team dual outcomes are not factored into the team rankings.
The Trackwrestling rankings go out to 33, representing the number of wrestlers who will qualify for the NCAA Championships at each weight class.
The rankings are coordinated by David Mirikitani and Mark Ostrander.
