TALLINN, Estonia – Showing a lot of heart and talent, Peyton Omania (Concord, Calif./Michigan State/CYC) won a bronze medal at 67 kg/147 lbs. in Greco-Roman at Junior World Wrestling Championships on Sunday night, closing out a strong effort by the USA team.
Omania had two nice throws and outlasted Xin Huang of China, 6-5 in the finals. Coming in, Huang was fifth in 2018 and 2019 Asian Junior Championships
Omania struck first, attempting a throw and then powering Huang to his back for a four-point move. Omania went for a headlock in the second period and got another two points to lead 6-0, but Huang quickly reversed him for a point. While on top, Huang lifted and threw Omania for four points, making it 6-5. Omania battled hard for the final minute, keeping aggressive and not letting Huang score to secure the victory.
Omania had an impressive Saturday morning session. Drawn into a pigtail match, Omania won four matches convincingly to reach the semifinals. His first three wins were by technical fall, over Jaewon Lee of Korea, Ignazio Sanfilippo of Italy and Saurabh Saurabh of India. In the quarterfinals, he frustrated 2016 Cadet World silver medalist Mohammed Reza Mokhtari of Iran with an impressive 7-3 win.
In the evening on Saturday, Omania was defeated by 2016 Cadet World champion and 2019 European Junior champion Giorgi Shotadze of Georgia, 7-0. Shotadze went on to claim the gold medal tonight.

The USA finished the tournament with three medals, for the first time in the history of the 17-20 year old age-group, which is now Junior and was previously called Espoir. The USA has won two World medals six different times (1991, 1993, 2011, 2016, 2017, 2018).
