Kilty claims silver, Fiske places fifth on final night of women’s freestyle at Junior Worlds

TALLINN, Estonia – Macey Kilty (Stratford, Wis./Sunkist Kids) captured a silver medal at the Junior World Championships on Friday night.
She was edged by four-time age-group World medalist Miwa Morikawa of Japan in the gold-medal finals, 2-1. It was a very closely contested battle between two very skilled wrestlers.
In the first period, Kilty was awarded a point when Morikawa could not score on the shot clock. In the second period, after a Morikawa leg attack, Kilty stepped out of bounds and Morikawa tied the bout at 1-1. In another exchange, Morikawa got behind Kilty, who tried to break the grip, and was penalized with a caution and one to make it 2-1 for Morikawa. Kilty was unable to score in the closing moments of the match.
A 2018 Cadet World champion, Kilty is now a four-time age-group World medalist. It was her second straight year claiming a silver at the Junior Worlds. She also won a bronze at the 2006 Cadet World Championships.
On Thursday, Kilty had a pair of technical falls in the morning session, beating Nerea Pampin Blanco of Spain, 10-0 and Wiktoria Choluj of Poland, 12-1. She later pinned Hanna Sadchanka of Belarus in 3:55 in the semifinals.
In the other U.S. women’s medal match on Friday night, Alyvia Fiske (Napa, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) dropped a heartbreaking 3-3 criteria decision against Anastasiya Alpyeyeva of Ukraine to finish fifth at 72 kg/158 lbs.
In the first period, Alpyeyeva led 1-0 when Fiske could not score on the shot clock. Fiske tied it up at 1-1 when Alpyeyeva could not score on the shot clock in the second period. During an exchange, Fiske was able to lock up a cradle and get behind Alyeyeva for a takedown and a 3-1 lead. In the closing moments of the match, Alpyeyva took a shot on Fiske, who countered, but Alpyeyva was able to flip Fiske for two exposure points to tie the match and secure criteria.
On Thursday, Fiske beat Johanna Meier of Germany with a dominant 10-0 technical fall in the quarterfinals. She was beaten in the semifinals by 2017 and 2018 Cadet World champion Yuka Kagami of Japan by pin
Fiske was competing in her second straight Junior World Championships for the USA. She will also compete in the 2019 U23 World Championships in October. Fiske was a 2019 U.S. Senior Open champion and is a WCWA All-American for Simon Fraser.
One other U.S. woman competed on Friday morning, Cameron Guerin (Yakima, Wash./Titan Mercury WC/EAP), who lost a repechage match to Youmei Wu of China. Guerin finished in ninth place in her weight class.
All five women in the second group of U.S. wrestlers placed in the top 10 of their weights, which scored team points for the USA. Finishing in eighth place in their weight classes were Gracie Figueroa (Selma, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) at 53 kg/116.5 lbs. and Alara Boyd (Yorktown, Ind./CIA) at 62 kg/136.5 lbs.
From the first group of U.S. athletes, Jayden Laurent (Denmark, Wis./Titan Mercury WC) placed fifth at 68 kg/149.75 lbs.
The United States placed sixth in the team standings with 62 points. Japan dominated the competition, with eight champions and two bronze medalists, scoring an amazing 230 points. Russia was second with 115 points and Ukraine was third with 91 points. Japan swept all five gold medals on Friday night.
The competition continues on Saturday and Sunday with the conclusion of the Greco-Roman competition.
