TALLINN, Estonia – Jayden Laurent (Denmark, Wis./Titan Mercury WC) has qualified for the semifinals in women’s freestyle at the Junior World Wrestling Championships on Wednesday morning.
Laurent, also a 2018 Junior World Team member, opened up with a 9-0 victory over Gulsezim Bukhayeva of Kazakhstan in her first bout at 68 kg/149.75 lbs. Her offense included a four-point takedown, two two-point takedowns and a stepout point.
In the quarterfinals, Laurent secured a pin over Thamires Martins Machado of Brazil in 3:18. The match started slowly for Laurent, who only led 1-0 at the break when Machado could not score on the shot clock. Laurent got her double leg offense going, forcing a few stepouts, then blasted Machado with a four-point takedown to her back, then secured the fall.
Laurent will battle Meerim Zhumanazarova of Kyrgyzstan in the semifinals tonight. Zhumanazarova is a three-time Asian Junior champion, and was a 2016 Cadet World bronze medalist.
Laurent has made the last two U.S. Senior National Teams, placing No. 3 on the ladder in 2018 and 2019. She was a 2019 U.S. Senior Open runner-up. Laurent won a 2019 WCWA national title at Lakeland University and is now with the Badger RTC.
Falling in the quarterfinals, but still a possibility for repechage is Korinahe Bullock (Chahokia, Ill./Titan Mercury WC/McKendree Bearcat WC) at 76 kg/167.5 lbs.
Bullock was in total control in her first match, hitting two four-point takedowns on the way to a 10-0 technical fall over Seoun Kim of Korea.
In the quarterfinals, Bullock was pinned by Qian Jiang of China in 2:45. The match was 4-2 in favor of Jiang, when Jiang tossed Bullock to her back and secured the pin. Bullock needs Jiang to win her semifinal in order to earn a spot in repechage.
Two U.S. wrestlers were defeated in their first match, but still have the possibility of repechage: two-time age-group World medalist Alleida Martinez (Selma, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) at 50 kg/110 lbs. and 2018 Junior World Team member Alex Hedrick (Fair Oaks, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) at 55 kg/121 lbs.
Martinez never got her offense going in an opening round 6-0 loss to 2019 Pan American Junior champion and 2017 Cadet World bronze medalist Lucia Yepez Guzman of Ecuador. Yepez scored a takedown in the first period and two takedowns in the second period. Yepez has reached the semifinals, and must win tonight to pull Martinez back into the tournament.
Martinez came in as a two-time age-group World medalist, with a 2015 Cadet World silver medal and a 2016 Cadet World bronze medal. This is her second straight Junior World appearance.
Hedrick also had a slow start in her bout, falling behind 4-0 at the break to Anastasia Blayvas of Germany, and eventually losing the bout 10-2. Hedrick’s two points came in a scramble in the second period where Blayvas also got two tilts for four points. Blayvas won her quarterfinal bout by fall, and could pull Hedrick back with a semifinal win on Wednesday night.
Knocked out of the tournament without a chance for repechage was Michaela Beck (New York, N.Y./New York AC/Hawkeye WC) at 59 kg/130 lbs. Beck was pinned in her opening match by Ana Beatrice Nuernberger of Germany in 2:13.
Beck scored the first takedown, but when back on their feet, Neurnberger locked up a double overhook, then threw Beck to her back, ultimately securing the fall. Beck was ineligible for repechage when Neurnberger was defeated in the quarterfinals.
The semifinals will begin at 5:15 p.m. in Tallinn, which is seven hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time zone. It will be immediately followed by the medal round matches of the men’s freestyle tournament at 6:00 p.m.
All of the action is live on Trackwrestling.
