Soto, Mancuso win silver medals in Gi at Grappling Worlds in Kazakhstan

ASTANA, Kazakhstan – The United States capped off a busy week at the Grappling World Championships by winning two silver medals in the Senior Gi division on Sunday.
Reaching the finals and placing second were Carlos Soto (West Lafayette, Ind./Impact Indiana), silver at 92 kg and Vincent Mancuso (Paramus, N.J./Camal Judo/Renzo Gracie Woodland Park) at Over 100 kg. Both were defeated by opponents from Russia in the gold-medal finals.
Soto, on his third straight USA World Team, reached the finals with a pair of submission victories. He opened with a submission of Yaroslav Isichko of Ukraine in 3:18, then put away Piotr Baginski of Poland in 4:55. In the finals, he was defeated by Arsen Shapiev of Russia, 10-0.
Mancuso won his opening fight by forfeit over Sheraz Mohammad Ahmed Khan Qasuri of Pakistan. In the semifinals, he stopped Nurbek Ismailov of Kyrgyzstan by submission in 3:18.
In the finals, Mancuso took down Ruslan Abdulaev of Russia for a 2-0 lead, but Abdulaev came back to take a 9-2 lead and finish off the match with a submission in 3:42.
Mancuso, who competes in judo as well as Grappling, was in his first Grappling World Championships for Team USA.
Soto and Mancuso were the lone U.S. athletes to win a bout. Aaron Johnson (Greenwood, Ind./Impact Indiana) dropped a pair of bouts at 62 kg to place fifth.
On the Senior level, the United States won five medals this year. In the No-Gi division on Saturday, Steven Ramos (Nyack, N.Y./Essential) won a silver medal at 77 kg and bronze medals were claimed by Kalin Goodsite (Riverside, Calif./Alliance MMA) at 62 kg and Travis Clark (Fort Worth, Texas/All American Wrestling Club) at Over 100 kg.
The five Senior medals in 2018 was an increase over three Senior medals last year.
The team also claimed seven medals in the Veterans division earlier in the week, including six gold medals.
For the second straight year, Team USA was coached by Eddy Ellis of Olympia, Wash. Also assisting was Mancuso’s personal coach Anthony Camal of Woodland Park, N.J. Serving as head referee was Rich Tado of Fox River Grove, Ill.
