HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The battle between No. 8 Lehigh and No. 11 Cornell got heated up during the quarterfinals and consolation round on Saturday night at the EIWA Championships

Both teams pushed eight wrestlers into Sunday morning’s semifinals. Lehigh has one athlete left in the consolation rounds tomorrow, while Cornell has no athletes in the wrestlebacks. The Mountain Hawk lead is 8.5 points.

“We have to continue to build. We have to be a little better tomorrow than we were today. We usually do better on second days. We have been tested. We have to score points. We have some big, big battles. As you get deeper in the tournament, (bonus points) get harder, so you get them when you can. You can still get them. We have to battle. We need to be really tough tomorrow and be ready to wrestle," said Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro.

Lehigh’s NCAA champion Darian Cruz scored a big pin at 125. Leading 14-0 over No. 8 seed Aslan Kilic of Navy, he chose neutral for the start of the third period. Cruz took down Kilic to his back and secured a big fall at 5:42.

“I could have gone down and got the tech. I looked over to the coaches and they said go neutral and put him on his back from the feet. I agreed. He took a shot and I capitalized on it,” said Cruz.

Lehigh’s first loss came at 157 pounds when No. 3 seed Justin Staudenmayer of Brown edged No. 6 Ian Brown, 2-1. The next loss came at 165 pounds, when No. 5 Drew Daniels of Navy edged Lehigh’s No. 4 Gordon Wolf 5-3 in overtime with a takedown.

Cornell scored some key bonus points with some talented freshmen No. 1 seeds. Yianni Diakomihalis got an 18-3 technical fall over Pat D'arcy of Princeton at 141 pounds. At 197, Ben Darmstadt, who is No. 1 in some national polls, pinned No. 8 Steban Cervantes of Navy in 51 seconds.

Cornell’s first loss came at 149 pounds in the quarterfinals, when No. 10 seed Frank Garcia of Binghamton got by No. 2 Will Koll of Cornell, 3-2. Their next quarterfinals loss came at 157, when Penn State transfer and No. 5 seed Garett Hammond of Drexel avenged a previous loss to No. 4 seed Fredy Stroker, 9-3.

The consolation rounds were tough to both teams.

Koll was eliminated in wrestle-backs, in an overtime injury default loss to Ryan Burkert of Hofstra at 149 pounds. The injury came in a sudden victory, with the score tied 10-10, during a scramble for a takedown. Shortly after, Stroker was pinned by Brock Wilson of Harvard in 1:57 at 157 pounds.

Lehigh had a setback as well at 157 pounds in consolation when Brown was dominated in a 9-0 major decision loss to Tristan Rifanburg of Binghamton. Lehigh avoided another scare at 165 pounds, when Wolf got behind big early, 6-0, but was able to rally back to secure a 12-10 win over Vincent DePrez of Binghamton.

There are two Lehigh-Cornell matches in the semifinals on Sunday. Lehigh’s top seed Jordan Kutler faced No. 4 seed Brandon Womack of Cornell at 174 pounds. At 197 pounds, freshman star and No. 1 seed Ben Darmstadt of Cornell) draws No. 4 seed Chris Weiler of Lehigh.

The battle for third place in the standings has become more clarified, with Princeton in third with 53 points, Navy in fourth with 52 points and Drexel in fifth with 45 points. Princeton has nine wrestlers left in the draw, with four in the semifinals and five in the wrestle-backs. Navy has five semifinalists and two in the consolations. Drexel has two semifinalists and five on the back side.

The semifinals begin at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, with the championship finals at 3:00 p.m. All of the action is on FloWrestling, with brackets on FloArena.
