King dominates with five champions at Tornado Open

BRISTOL, Tenn. – King University picked up five of nine champions on Sunday afternoon at the Tornado Open in Bristol, Tenn.

Earning titles for King, who played host to the tournament, were Regina Doi at 101 pounds, Aleeah Gould at 116 pounds, Allison Petix at 130 pounds, Nicole Joseph at 136 pounds and Victoria Espinoza at 191 pounds.

At 101 pounds, Doi, a three-time WCWA All-American and 2017 runner-up, tallied two technical falls for the top prize in round-robin action. In the third round, she defeated 2017 All-American and teammate Cassidy Ferrell.

Like her teammate, Gould, a 2017 All-American, also recorded a pair of tech falls at 116 pounds. The bracket was also round robin.  

Petix, a freshman, teched her way to the 130-pound finals, where she faced Charline Hagemaster of Emmanuel. Petix ended her tournament with a 13-2 win.

At 136 pounds, Joseph was the lone Tornado in a bracket full of Emmanuel Lions. She picked up two tech falls and a decision for the crown.

Espinoza dominated the field at 191 pounds, collecting three falls and one tech fall. All three of her falls came in the first period.

Emmanuel earned three champions, including Abigail Nette at 123 pounds, Felicity Bryant at 143 pounds and 2017 All-American Hanna Gladden at 170 pounds.

Maggie Elliott of Adrian College was the champion at 155 pounds.

There was no competition at 109 pounds.
