ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell wrestling team won all the close matches early and added some bonus points late to earn a 32-6 win over No. 24 North Carolina on Friday evening at a sold-out Friedman Wrestling Center. The Big Red closed out dual season with a 13-2 record, while the Tar Heels fell to 9-11.

Cornell won three one-point decisions in the first four contested bouts after the home team gained a forfeit to begin the match at 125. The early lead wasn't necessary in the end, as Cornell won seven of the nine contests and earned bonus points in the final two to earn its ninth straight win.

North Carolina press release

ITHACA, N.Y. --- No. 11 Cornell took eight of 10 bouts in a 32-6 win over No. 24 North Carolina Friday night at the Friedman Wrestling Center. No. 8 Troy Heilmann and No. 16 Ethan Ramos were winners for the Tar Heels, who wrap up their regular season at 9-11 and will now prepare to host the ACC Championships on March 3.

Heilmann improved to 27-4 in a memorable redshirt senior campaign with a 10-7 decision over Will Koll at 149 pounds. With the bout tied at 5-5 in the third period, Heilmann finished a shot at the edge of the mat to take a 7-5 lead and added another late takedown for the win.

Ramos opened the third period of his match at 174 pounds with a quick reversal and rode out the final period for a 6-3 decision. The All-American closed out the regular season at 15-5 with wins in his final three bouts ahead of the postseason.

One of the best bouts of the night came at 141, where No. 19 A.C. Headlee went toe to toe with No. 4 Yianni Diakomihalis. Diakomihalis, who has only lost once all season, was pushed to the limit, just holding on for a 7-6 decision. No. 3 Ben Darmstadt highlighted the final three bouts for Cornell (13-2), pinning No. 15 Danny Chaid at 2:31 in the opening period.

Carolina will now break for two weeks before hosting the 2018 ACC Championships at Carmichael Arena on Saturday, March 3.
