Phillipi jumps 11 spots to No. 6 at 133 pounds in Trackwrestling rankings
by Article by Andy Hamilton; rankings by David Mirikitani, Trackwrestling
The first major checkpoint of the college wrestling season shook up the Trackwrestling Division I rankings presented by Resilite.
Second-ranked Ohio State rolled to the title against a loaded Cliff Keen Las Vegas Top-ranked Penn State beat up Bucknell and Lehigh, winning 19 of its 20 matches on the weekend. No. 3 Iowa slipped past Iowa State in perhaps the best dual meet of the season to this point.
When the individual dominoes fell and the dust settled in the team rankings, Penn State stretched out its lead over the rest of the field, Minnesota moved into the Top 5 and Princeton climbed three notches to No. 14.
The top-ranked Nittany Lions increased their projected NCAA placement and advancement point total to 117, pushing their lead over the No. 2 Buckeyes (77.5) to 39.5 points. Iowa is third with 73.5, despite losing two-time All-American Michael Kemerer to a season-ending surgery. Oklahoma State is fourth with 62.5, followed by a tie for fifth with Michigan and Minnesota at 51.
The Gophers gained ground when true freshman Gable Steveson moved to the top of the heavyweight rankings after cruising to the title in Vegas, where he registered a first-round fall and outscored his next four opponents by a combined 54-16 count.
Rutgers moved up two spots to No. 13, thanks to returning NCAA finalist Nick Suriano’s jump to No. 2 at 133 after his title-winning performance in Vegas. Suriano outscored his five opponents 64-21 and posted an 11-3 major decision win in the finals against Pittsburgh’s Micky Phillippi.
Phillippi was one of this week’s biggest movers. He jumped from No. 17 to No. 6 at 133 after beating three ranked opponents, including All-Americans Ethan Lizak of Minnesota and Luke Pletcher of Ohio State, on his way to the finals.
The Trackwrestling team rankings are based off the number of advancement and placement points each squad would accumulate if its wrestlers finished in those ranking slots at the NCAA Championships. Top-ranked wrestlers earn 20 points, followed by 16 for second, 13.5 for third, 12.5 for fourth, 10 for fifth, 9 for sixth, 6.5 for seventh, 5.5 for eighth, 2 for spots 9-12, 1.5 for spots 13-16 and 1 for 17-25.
The rankings are compiled by David Mirikitani.
