EAP athlete Cameron Guerin wins Wayland Women's Open

USA Wrestling Elite Accelerator Athlete (EAP) athlete Cameron Guerin won the 123-pound division of the Wayland Women’s Open, hosted by Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, Texas, last weekend.

Guerin graduated from David High School in Washington earlier this spring and elected to forego the traditional college experience, signing with USA Wrestling as a United States Olympic Training Center resident athlete.

“Training at the OTC prepared me physically and mentally for my first college-level tournament,” Guerin said. “I had a dominant mindset and I got the job done. Thankful for all my coaches and training partners that constantly push me to be a better wrestler.”

In her first college tournament as an OTC athlete, Guerin ran through the 123-pound bracket, winning all four of her matches by either technical fall or pin.

To begin the tournament, Guerin defeated Colorado Mesa’s Karen Acosta-Reyes, a freshman for the new program, 10-0.

The quarterfinals featured a first-period fall as Guerin stuck host school’s Angelica Garcia in 45 seconds to move onto the semifinals.

In the semis, the Washington native breezed past Hailey Scheirmeyer of Midland University with a 10-0 victory.

For the title, Guerin tallied her second fall of the day, pinning CMU’s Sierra Brown Ton in 1:11.

The OTC athlete ended the day with four wins, spending only 5:23 on the mat, collectively, and not surrendering a single point to her opponents.

The Wayland Women’s Open was Guerin’s first competition since the 2018 Junior Pan American Championships in August in Fortaleza, Brazil, where she won gold at 55 kg.
