U.S. Grappling World Team Trials return to Las Vegas, Nev., April 26-27

The 2018 U.S. Grappling World Team Trials return to Las Vegas, Nevada, alongside the U.S. Open Wrestling Championships at South Point Hotel, April 26-27.


The U.S. Grappling World Team Trials features the two recognized styles of UWW Grappling, with the Gi competition on Thursday, April 26 and the No-Gi division set for Friday, April 27. It is an Open competition, with no pre-qualification necessary.


This is the second straight year that the U.S. Grappling Trials has been held alongside the U.S. Open Wrestling Championships, one of the biggest and most important wrestling events of the season. Awards given to the top three place winners in each weight class.


Winners at the Grappling World Team Trials will qualify to represent the United States at the 2018 Senior Grappling World Championships. United World Wrestling has not officially announced the site of the 2018 Grappling World Championships.

UWW Senior Grapplers are 20 years old and above. (Born: 1998 and before). There are eight weight classes for men and five weight classes for women on the Senior level. Weigh-ins will be in kilograms. The classes are:
Men: 62 kg/136 lbs., 66 kg/145.5 lbs., 71 kg/156 lbs., 77 kg/169.5 lbs., 84 kg/185 lbs., 92 kg/202.5 lbs., 100 kg/220 lbs., Over 100 kg/Over 220 lbs.
Women: 53 kg/116.5 lbs., 58 kg/127.5 lbs., 64 kg/141 lbs., 71 kg/156.25, Over 71 kg/Over 156.25 lbs.

The United States has been a traditional power in Grappling for many years. The USA won UWW Grappling World Team Titles in No-Gi Grappling in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2014, as well as Gi Grappling team titles in 2008 and 2009. A total of 36 different U.S. Grapplers have won UWW Grappling World titles.


At the 2017 Grappling World Team Trials, among the champions in both No-Gi and Gi was Breanna Stikkelman (Simi Valley/Street Sports), a double champion at 58 kg/ 127.5 lbs. At the 2017 Grappling World Championships, Stikkelman won a World gold medal in Gi at 64 kg and a World silver medal in No-Gi at 58 kg.


Other double champions at the 2017 Grappling World Team Trials were Matt Holt of Edge MMA and Fitness at 62 kg, Joshua Hinger of Atos Jiu Jitsu at 84 kg, Carlos Soto of Team Impact Indiana at 92 kg and Laree Callihan of United Training Center at Women’s Over 71 kg.


Past UWW Grappling World champions who won titles at the 2017 Grappling World Team Trials were No-Gi champions Jason Patino of Edge MMA and Fitness at 71 kg, Brandon Ruiz of Edge MMA and Fitness at Over 100 kg and Lisa Ward of United Training Center at 53 kg.


There was a tie for the team title at the 2017 Grappling World Team Trials between Edge MMA and Fitness and the United Training Center.

Important Weigh-in Information

•Athletes competing in BOTH Grappling World Team Trials- Gi and No-Gi will only weigh-in once for both events.

•Athletes competing in BOTH Grappling World Team Trials and Masters Nationals MUST weigh-in for both events during the scheduled times. Weigh-ins do not carry over from Masters Nationals to Grappling World Team Trials.

•Athletes are responsible for picking up both weigh-in cards in order to have single weigh-in count.

•This is contingent upon the athlete actively competing in the first of the two wrestling styles scheduled.

•Athletes competing in No-Gi only must weigh in on Friday during the scheduled time
