A fighting spirit that redefines elite

“Winning isn’t everything. It’s the only thing.”

Found in print and in paint, in halftime speeches and on locker room walls, it is perhaps the most famous quotation in the sporting world. It is also among the most erroneously attributed—to legendary football coach Vince Lombardi (the quote actually belongs to the former UCLA football coach, Red Sanders). However, it is what Coach Lombardi did say that is far more poignant and insightful into what it actually takes to succeed: “Winning isn’t everything. The will to win is the only thing.”

This intensity of will and determination is an uncommon thing to common people, and yet, it is consistently found in those who keep fighting until a way to win is found.

It is this unique trait that the United States Marine Corps deems, “fighting spirit” and it is said to be what fuels every Marine in every type of battle. Today, the Semper Fidelis All-American Program honors this spirit and the high school student athletes who demonstrate it, not just in athletics and in the classroom, but in their communities and in all aspects of life.

Those high school juniors the Semper Fidelis All-American Program recognizes each

year as having “faced life’s battles with the conviction and determination to succeed” and are honored during an all-expenses-paid trip to the Battles Won Academy, a 3-day event in our nation’s capital featuring an immersive Marine Corps experience, community service initiatives and world- renowned speakers including professional athletes, coaches and civic leaders.

“Marines and Semper Fidelis All-Americans are all bound by the willpower to break through barriers and persevere in adverse situations. This initiative links the Corps with students that share the same fighting spirit and code of ethics that is a part of all Marines.” said MajGen Paul Kennedy, the Commanding General of Marine Corps Recruiting Command.

2018 Semper Fidelis All-Americans will also be able to invite a mentor of their choosing to attend the event with them, and are automatically eligible for exclusive scholarship opportunities.
