The 63rd Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Championships are set for this Saturday, March 4, at the Reynolds Coliseum on North Carolina State’s campus in Raleigh, N.C.
The tournament serves as a qualifier for the 2017 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. The ACC was allocated 31 automatic bids to national tournament.
Of the six institutions competing, three have earned national rankings in the final NWCA Coaches poll, No. 4 Virginia Tech, No. 8 NC State and No. 23 Pitt.
Virginia Tech dominates the ACC rankings with an 18-1 dual record, with its only loss to No. 10 Mizzou. NC State takes the conference’s No. 2 spot with a 13-2 record.
The ACC title looks like it will come down to the Hokies and the Wolfpack.
Virginia Tech is searching for its first conference title since winning back to back titles in 2013 and 2014. The Hokies will return four All-Americans and ACC runners-up from last year, including nationally ranked by FloWrestling, No. 3 Ty Walz (285), No. 3 Jared Haught (197), No. 5 Zach Epperly (174) and No. 7 Solomon Chishko (149).
The Hokies have two returning ACC champions in No. 4 Joey Dance (125) and No. 9 Zack Zavatsky (184). Dance, a 2014 All-American, is searching for his third-straight ACC championship title, while Zavatsky competes for his second ACC title.
The two wrestlers combined have three losses so far this season. Dance is 22-1 at 125 with his only loss coming at the hands of then-No. 8 Darian Cruz of Lehigh, while Zavatsky posts a 22-2 record with losses to then-No. 11 Michael Macchiavello from NC State and No. 1 Gabe Dean from Cornell.
Another nationally ranked wrestler for Virginia Tech is No. 20 Sal Mastriani (157).
Defending ACC champions NC State is searching to claim the program’s 16th overall conference title.
Kevin Jack, a junior at 141 pounds, is ranked at No. 2 in the country and has compiled a 27-1 record. Jack is looking to claim his second ACC title this year.
Other nationally ranked wrestlers for NC State include No. 9 Sam Speno, senior at 149 pounds, No. 12 Michael Macchiavello, a junior at 184 pounds, No. 13 Sean Fausz, a sophomore at 125 pounds, and No. 18 Jamal Morris, a sophomore at 133 pounds.
Fausz and Morris competed in last year’s ACC championships and came up just short. Fausz placed second in 2016, while Morris took third.
Pittsburgh will bring some heavy competition to 133 pounds and 165 pounds, with No. 8 Dom Forys and No. 12 TeShan Campbell receiving top seeds.
The University of Virginia brings a pair of nationally ranked wrestlers in No. 8 Jack Mueller at 125 pounds and No. 6 George DiCamillo at 141 pounds. DiCamillo looks to become only the sixth ACC wrestler to win four conference titles. The last to accomplish the feat was North Carolina’s Matt Kenny in 2002.
Mueller and DiCamillo, along with Will Mason at 133 pounds are set as the No. 2 seeds.
Competing at 174 for the University of North Carolina is All-American and returning ACC champion Ethan Ramos, a junior for the TarHeels. He is No. 2 in the conference behind VT’s Epperly.
Carrying Duke at 285 pounds is No. 5 Jacob Kasper, who holds the No. 2 spot in the conference and is 26-2 so far this season. Kasper’s regular season was highlighted by a 15-7 major decision over No. 1-seed and two-time All-American Ty Walz.
Wrestling is set to begin on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET. The tournament will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
