MARQUETTE, Mich. — Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site Greco-Roman wrestlers will compete for the first time in 2017 on Feb. 1, at the Dave Schultz Memorial International in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The team has not competed since Dec. 17-18, when six wrestlers earned medals and 14 others finished in the top 10 at the U.S. Open in Las Vegas. It was a best-ever finish for the NMU squad.
Leading the NMU-OTS team at 66 kg/145 lbs. will be 2016 U.S. Non-Olympic Weight World Team Trials runner-up Alex Sancho (Miami, Fla./NMU-OTS). Sancho also placed third at the U.S. Olympic Trials in April. Sancho placed second last year at the Dave Schultz Memorial International and is looking to improve upon that this year.
A pair of the 2016 U.S. Open runners-up will also be competing, Jess Porter (Albany, N.Y./NMU-OTS) at 75 kg/165 lbs. and Khymba Johnson (Marquette, Mich./NMU-OTS) at 85 kg/187lbs. Porter was also the 2016 University Nationals Champion. Johnson was runner-up at the 2016 University Nationals.
Bill Farrell bronze medalist and 2016 Dave Schultz runner up Sam Jones (Folsom, La./NMU-OTS) will be competing at 59 kg/130 lbs. Jones also placed third at the U.S. Open.
2016 University National Champion Dalton Roberts (Fowlerville, Mich./NMU-OTS) will be joining the team at 59 kg/130 lbs. Roberts competed on two Junior World Teams.
During the rest of last semester, the team produced 12 medals and 23 top-10 finishes in international contests, wrestling in Panama, Sweden, Finland and the United States.
Assistant coach Andy Bisek is ready to get the team back on the mat in a competition setting.
“I am looking forward for our guys to get another opportunity to compete, as I feel that is one of the biggest ways you can improve,” said Bisek. “Right now I am looking to build upon our base and improve a few of the mistakes I saw during Senior Nationals.”
The Schultz tournament is held in memory of the late Dave Schultz, an Olympic and World champion for the United States, who was an international ambassador of goodwill through sport.
It also serves as one of the qualifiers for the 2017 U.S. World Team Trials, which are set for April 27-29 in Las Vegas. To date, the NMU-OTS has 22 athletes qualified for that event.
