Dave Mathews of Douglasville, Ga. has been named to the new position of Application Developer for USA Wrestling, the National Governing Body for wrestling in the United States.
Mathews will work in USA Wrestling’s IT Department on a variety of technology, application and web development projects. In addition, a portion of Mathews time will be devoted to developmental coaching assignments, supporting the age-group programs within USA Wrestling’s National Teams Department.
“We are excited about this opportunity to advance USA Wrestling from a technology perspective,” said Meredith Wilson, USA Wrestling’s IT Director. “Not only is Dave a talented and seasoned professional in application development, but he is an excellent wrestling coach and state leader who understands the sport at all levels. His wrestling background will be a strength in this new position. We are pleased to add him to our team.”
Mathews combines extensive professional experience in application development and technology with a successful career as a wrestling coach and leader.
“The biggest thing that makes this opportunity so great is that I get to use my skills in programming to help better the sport and grow wrestling. For years, I have helped out USA Wrestling on its path forward. Now we will be able to advance the organization, make it up to date, and bring technology to the forefront within wrestling,” said Mathews.
He has helped USA Wrestling on specific IT projects in the past as a contractor, and has vast knowledge of USA Wrestling’s activities and systems. One of Mathews first major assignments in the new full-time position will be the creation and management of the online membership system for USA Wrestling.
“This is a big win for USA Wrestling, adding Dave to the team,” said USA Wrestling Executive Director Rich Bender. “This affords us the opportunity to use technology to drive our sport and organization forward. The first order of business is to develop a best-in-class member management system to improve and enrich the USA Wrestling member experience. We are excited to welcome Dave and his family to USA Wrestling. We certainly are fortunate to add someone with such unique talents, both technological and coaching, to the organization.”
While studying broadcasting in college, Mathews saw the direction of the media industry towards the worldwide web, and focused his attention to programming. He worked for five years for the cable network CNN as a video engineer. Mathews also served as a web developer for Mercer University’s medical school for three years.
He comes to USA Wrestling after serving 10 years as a senior programmer for Spinen, a technology firm which specializes in small business solutions.
Mathews is currently in his third year as the head women’s wrestling coach for Life University, which has developed two WCWA college All-Americans and eight All-Americans in USA Wrestling national events. Mathews founded the women’s varsity program at Life. He also founded and coached the club wrestling teams at Mercer University and Georgia Southern University.
He has served on Team Georgia’s National Team coaching staff for 15 years, and has been with Georgia’s Women’s National Team for five years. In this role with Georgia’s USA Wrestling state association, Mathews has helped coach numerous USA Wrestling All-Americans at various age-group levels.
Mathews has also been a top high school wrestling coach in Georgia, serving in head and assistant coaching positions with the Windsor Academy and Alexander High School. He coached Georgia state champion high school teams for Windsor Academy in 2008 and Alexander High School in 2010.
He was owner and operator of the respected Mid-State Wrestling Academy in Macon, Ga. for five years, where he produced several successful wrestlers who have been USA Wrestling All-Americans and Georgia state champions and placewinners.
Mathews is a USA Wrestling bronze certified coach. He coached two U.S. Pan-American Cadet women’s wrestling teams, which competed in Colombia and Peru.
He was an NCWA national runner-up and four-year captain of the wrestling program at Georgia Southern University. Mathews was a state placewinner for Southeast High School in Macon, Ga.
He and his wife Jennifer have a son Dawson (13) and daughter A.J. (9). Dawson is a wrestler.
“I love the fact that I still get the opportunity to work with athletes, by helping cover the age-group levels. I am very comfortable with that group of wrestlers, because I have coached them for more than 10 years. I can help them to grow before they go on to college and Senior-level careers,” said Mathews.
