Websites launched for Open Wrestling Championship, set for April 25-29 at South Point Arena in Las Vegas

USA Wrestling has launched the official event websites for the 2017 Open Wrestling Championships, which will be held at the South Point Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., April 25-29.


The tournament will include competition in numerous age levels and styles, going from youth to high school to Senior-level to the Masters division. Styles to be contested are freestyle, Greco-Roman, folkstyle and Grappling. There is competition available for both men and women, boys and girls. There are nine different competitions coming together for the U.S. Open this year.


This is a huge celebration of wrestling, something that wrestlers, coaches, families and fans will not want to miss. Many of these events play an important role in the U.S. World Team process for the year.


Athletes who wish to enter any of these competitions are able to register starting right now.


For all of the events, there is a substantial discount on the entry fee for those who book their hotel rooms at the South Point Casino Hotel.

Below is a summary of the events being held at the 2017 Open Wrestling Championships:

Senior Greco Roman World Team Trials, April 27-29

This event determines the 2017 U.S. Senior Greco-Roman World Team, with winners in each of the eight World Championship weight classes earning the right to compete at the World Championships in Paris, France, August 21-26. The championship finals is a best-of-three series. This event also sets the 2017-18 U.S. National Team in Greco-Roman. Athletes must qualify for this event as outlined in the 2017 World Team Trials Qualifications and Procedures.

Senior Women's Freestyle World Team Trials, April 27-29

This event determines the 2017 U.S. Senior Women’s World Team, with winners in each of the eight World Championship weight classes earning the right to compete at the World Championships in Paris, France, August 21-26. The championship finals is a best-of-three series. This event also sets the 2017-18 U.S. National Team in women’s freestyle. Athletes must qualify for this event as outlined in the 2017 World Team Trials Qualifications and Procedures.

Senior U.S. Freestyle Nationals, April 27-29

This is the annual Senior National Championships in men’s freestyle wrestling. Senior National titles and All-American honors are up for grabs in the eight World Championship weight classes. The top seven placewinners in each weight class qualify for the Freestyle World Team Trials in Lincoln, Neb., June 9-10.

UWW Junior Freestyle Nationals, April 27-29

This is the annual National Championships for men’s freestyle wrestlers on the UWW Junior level, which is for ages 17-29 years old. National titles and All-American honors are up for grabs. The top seven placewinners in each weight class qualify for the UWW Junior Freestyle World Team Trials in Lincoln, Neb., June 8-9.

UWW Junior Greco Roman Nationals/World Team Trials, April 26-27

This event serves as the National Championships and World Team Trials for Greco-Roman wrestlers on the UWW Junior level, which is for ages 17-29 years old. The championship finals in the eight UWW Junior World weight classes will be a best-of-three series, with the winner representing the USA at the Junior World Team Trials in Tampere, Finland, August 1-6.

Masters Freestyle & Greco-Roman Nationals, April 25-28

This is the annual National Championship for Masters-age wrestlers in both freestyle and Greco-Roman. Masters are wrestlers who are 25 years old and above. There are five age divisions at the Masters Freestyle and Greco-Roman Nationals.


U.S. Grappling Senior World Team Trials, April 27-29


This is the World Team Trials event, with the champions earning the right to compete in the 2017 Grappling World Championships on the Senior level. It is an Open competition, with no pre-qualification necessary. Competition will be held in No-Gi and Gi Grappling, with both a men’s and women’s division.

Western Junior Regionals, April 25-28

Traditionally, one of the largest and most competitive of USA Wrestling’s popular Junior Regional series, this event is for wrestlers in grades 9-12, and includes top athletes from across the nation. There are three divisions contested: men’s freestyle, women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman.

Las Vegas Kids & Cadet Open, April 27-29

This is a growing and prestigious youth wrestling event, with competition in folkstyle, freestyle and Greco-Roman in the following age groups: Bantam, Intermediate, Novice, Schoolboy/girl, Cadet. Also included is a Junior folkstyle division for boys and girls, plus a Cadet girls freestyle division. Many of the youth wrestlers entered in this tournament come from all over the United States.
