LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Three past World champions in No-Gi Grappling were among the winners at the U.S. World Team Trials on Saturday at the South Point Arena.
Two of the champions were previous gold-medalists at United World Wrestling (UWW) Grappling World Championships in the No-Gi division, Jason Patino of Edge MMA and Fitness at 71 kg and Brandon Ruiz of Edge MMA & Fitness at Over 100 kg.
Patino, who was a World champion in 2014, scored three wins by submission to dominate his five-athlete roundrobin.
Ruiz, who won his World title in 2011, and has won five career World medals, defeated three other super heavyweights on the way to his title.
The other past World champion was Joshua Hinger of Atos Jiu Jitsu, who was an IBJFF No-Gi World champion in 2006. He scored a submission in his finals match against George Ganssle of Renzo Gracie.
The winners in each weight class qualify for the USA No-Gi team for the 2017 UWW Grappling World Championships, set for Baku, Azerbaijan, October 18-19.
At 62 kg, in a battle of past Grappling World medalists, two-time World medalist Matt Holt of Edge MMA and Fitness dominated five-time World medalist Matt Betzold in the finals. Betzold was a World champion in 2014.
Winning the 92 kg weight class with three wins by submission was Carlos Soto of Team Impact Indiana. Among his victims was the eventual runner-up Andrew Mostowa of Moorpark.
In the women’s division, Breanna Stikkelman of UTC/Simi Valley won the 58 kg division, scoring submissions in both of her bouts, as well as winning another bout by forfeit.
There were five athletes who earned “double titles,” winning their weight classes in both No-Gi and Gi this weekend: Holt, Hinger, Soto, Stikkelman and Laree Calihan of United Training Center (71kg/women’s division). Calihan was uncontested in her weight class.
Other winners in the men’s division were Jason Carapellucci of Edge MMA & Fitness at 66 kg, Steven Ramos of Renzo Gracie at 77 kg and Hudson Taylor of Edge Hoboken at 100 kg.
Carapellucci won three bouts in a four-athlete roundrobin. Ramos had a big win in his finals, beating seven-time World medalist Michael Kelly of Old School in the finals. Taylor won his weight class uncontested.
Also making the U.S. Team by winning the 53 kg division for women uncontested was eight-time World medalist Lisa Ward.
The Grappling Cup, given each year to the club which scores the most points in the tournament was a tie this year, as defending Edge MMA and Fitness and the United Training Center both finished with 40 points each.
The Military Cup this year went to the U.S. Army, followed by the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Navy. Last year, the winner was the U.S. Air Force. Points are scored by either active-duty military, or veterans from the various military branches.
For the first time, the U.S. Grappling World Team Trials was broadcast on both FloGrappling and FloWrestling.
