LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Ten athletes claimed their weight classes to qualify for the U.S. World Team in Gi Grappling at the Grappling World Team Trials at the South Point on Thursday.

Among the notable champions with outstanding performances were Bobby Yamashita of All Navy at 77 kg, Joshua Hinger of Atos Jiu Jitsu at 84 kg and Breanna Stikkelman of Simi Valley at 58 kg in the women’s division.

Yamashita, a past UWW World bronze medalist in Gi Grappling, won a three-athlete roundrobin with a 2-0 record, both by submission. He opened with a submission over Anthony Uchytil of the DeltaWC in 2:54. In the final bout, he scored a submission in 1:10 over seven-time UWW No-Gi World medalist Michael Kelly of Old School.

“I have faced (Michael Kelly) twice before and he has beaten me in No-Gi. There was an advantage for me in Gi, because I do judo. I got a nice throw and got him in trouble,” said Yamashita.

Hinger, a 2016 IBJFF No-Gi World champion, won a best-of-three series over Jacob Hockenbury of Team Impact Indiana in two straight. He won the first bout, 5-0, then scored a 45 second submission in the second match.

“I felt really good. The first match is always pretty tough. I never get a really good warmup before the first match. Usually, the first match is the warmup. He was a tough kid, a really tough kid. Props to him. He’s a good wrestler, with a good base, and gave me a really good fight the first match. I wasn’t ready for a grinder like that. I pulled it up, and was really warm in the second match and felt good,” said Hinger.

Stikkelman won her three-athlete roundrobin with a pair of submissions, getting tapouts from Ireland Moran of Grindhouse in 1:12 and Kelli Rasmussen of the Minnesota Storm in 1:45.

“I felt pretty good coming out here. I came out her alone and I got two sub finishes for the gold. I was excited to be here. It is an awesome opportunity and I will come here every year if I can,” said Stikkelman.

The winners in each weight class qualify for the USA Gi team for the 2017 UWW Grappling World Championships, set for Baku, Azerbaijan, October 18-19.
