LAS VEGAS – The men’s freestyle semifinals of the 2017 U.S. Open are set with seven of the eight No. 1 seeds remaining unscathed heading into Friday evening at South Point Arena.
The highly anticipated potential match between Olympic champion and three-time World Champion Jordan Burroughs and Olympic Trials runner-up Kyle Dake is still in play with both men cruising to the 74 kg/163 lbs. semifinals.
Burroughs won three matches during the morning session without surrendering a point to set up a semifinal against Kevin LeValley who upended two-time NCAA champion Chris Perry, 3-2, in the quarters.
Dake, a four-time NCAA champion for Cornell, won both of his morning matches by technical fall with relative ease. He is set to face three-time NCAA champion Alex Dieringer in the semifinals tonight. The two met at the Paris International in January with Dake winning, 10-0.
The 65 kg/143 lbs. bracket held to form with all four top seeds qualifying for the semifinals. 2016 Olympian Frank Molinaro will battle defending U.S. Open champion Jimmy Kennedy in the top-side semi, while three-time U.S. World Team Trials runner-up Jordan Oliver takes on two-time NCAA champion Zain Retherford on the bottom side.
The David Taylor train continued to roll as the sixth-ranked wrestler in the World secured one pin and two technical falls to make the 86 kg/189 lbs. semifinals. Taylor will take on past NCAA runner-up Nicholas Heflin this evening. Heflin picked up one of the morning’s big wins by taking out two-time NCAA champion Gabe Dean, 6-3, in the quarters.
Sitting in the other semifinal at 86 kg is No 2 seed Richard Perry and NCAA champion Bo Nickal. Nickal won all three of his bouts by 10-0 technical fall. Perry picked up two 10-0 techs prior to downing past NCAA finalist Tim Dudley, 7-1, in the quarterfinals.
The top-four seeds at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. all qualified for the semifinals, but it was not without its thrilling moments and controversy.
Trailing 5-3 with short time remaining in the match, two-time U.S. World Team member Anthony Ramos stole victory from the clutch of defeat by taking down Frank Perrelli at the buzzer. Ramos will take on NCAA champion Nathan Tomasello for a place in the 57 kg finals. Tomasello was not without his own drama as he needed late heroics to top Nico Megaludis, 5-4. Alan Waters and Nahshon Garrett comprise the second 57 kg semifinal.
The 125 kg/275 lbs. bracket played out as many anticipated. Top man Zachery Rey will face Anthony Nelson in one semifinal, while Dominique Bradley and Nick Gwiazdowski will do battle once more in the other semifinal.
The only No. 1 seed to fall on Friday morning was Paris International silver medalist and NCAA champion Jasyon Ness at 61 kg/134 lbs. Ness was upset in his first match by former Ohio State wrestler Johnni DiJulius, 10-7.
The bracket continued to be busted when Brandon Wright took out DiJulius 10-0 to make the semifinals. Wright takes on past World Team Trials runner-up Joe Colon this evening. Colon won a wild quarterfinal match over NCAA runner-up Seth Gross, 16-12. The second 61 kg semifinal will feature two past NCAA champion for Oklahoma as Cody Brewer and Kendric Maple both won all of their respective matches by technical fall.
The remaining semifinal pairings come at 97 kg/213 lbs. with No. 1 seed Micah Burak facing Kallen Kleinschmidt on the top side, and Nathan Burak and Kyven Gadson renewing an Iowa-Iowa State rivalry from their college days on the bottom side.
The men’s freestyle semifinals will begin at 7:30 p.m. (PT) tonight and can be viewed live on Flowrestling.com.
