Beauperthuy wins gold, Cumiford gets bronze in Veterans Grappling No-Gi Worlds in Belarus

MINSK, Belarus – Two U.S. Grapplers won medals in the Veterans division No-Gi competition at the Grappling World Championships on Thursday.


Claiming a gold medal at 100+ kg/unlimited was Gabe Beauperthuy (Colorado Springs, Colo./Edge MMA & Fitness), who won all three of his bouts by submission.


Beauperthuy opened with a submission by Americana over Demin Alexander of Russia. In his second match, he secured a wrist lock for a submission over Gavduhanov Aslanbek of Russia. His final win came through a Kimora for a submission over Vlad Catalin of Russia.


In his three matches, Beauperthuy competed for a total of 6:05, with his fastest submission being his victory over Catalin in 1:05.


Beauperthuy is competing in his third straight UWW World Championships, after wrestling in the Belt World Championships in Kyrgyzstan and the Veterans Greco-Roman World Championships in Finland earlier this month.


Jason Cumiford (Lacey, Wash./United Training Center) won a bronze medal at 71 kg/156 lbs. Cumiford won his first match, a rear-naked choke for a submission against Imanbayev Asset of Kazakhstan. Cumiford was edged in his next match by Filimonov Ihor of Ukraine, 7-5.


Beauperthuy and Cumiford will also compete in the Veterans Gi Grappling competition on Friday.


Beauperthuy is also the USA entry in the Senior-level Grappling World Championships, where he will compete in No-Gi on Saturday and Gi on Sunday.
