STAR TRIBUNE: J Robinson fired by University of Minnesota after 30 years as wrestling coach
by Marcus Fuller and Joe Christensen, Star Tribune
The University of Minnesota fired wrestling coach J Robinson on Wednesday, nearly fourth months after reports first emerged of an alleged drug ring involving more than a dozen student-athletes forming inside his team earlier this year.
The firing ends a 30-year career that will rank among the most decorated in Gophers history. Robinson, 70, has coached Gophers wrestling since 1986 and led the team to its only three wrestling national championships.
However, Robinson's handling of the alleged use and sale of the prescription sedative Xanax by Gophers wrestlers was called into question almost immediately after reports in late May of the team's drug problem. On his first day on the job, June 1, athletic director Mark Coyle placed Robinson on paid administrative leave while the university conducted its investigation.
