MARQUETTE, Mich.— The Northern Michigan University Greco-Roman wrestling team is back on the mat and looking forward to another academic year.

The team, led by Olympic coach Rob Hermann and World champion Aghasi Manukyan, placed three wrestlers on the Junior National World Team and had five qualify for the University World Championships last year. Coach Hermann’s expectations are high coming into this season.

“With many of our wrestlers qualified for international competitions, I expect nothing less this year,” Hermann said. “During our first weeks of training, I can already tell that we have a great group of guys this season.”

This year’s roster of 47 athletes includes U.S. National Team member Alejandro Sancho, who placed third at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in April and second at the Pan American Championships in February. Sancho is ranked third in the nation at 66 kilograms.

Also back this year is Sam Jones at 59 kilos, who is also coming off of a strong year last season with a third-place finish at the Pan American Championships and a silver medal at the University National Championships.

“It is nice to have leadership from all our senior wrestlers,” Hermann said. “Having guys work with the new team members really helps them catch up to where they need to be.”

Incoming freshman and U.S. Junior World Team members Randon Miranda, Dalton Roberts and Jamal DeArmond will arrive on campus fresh off competing at the UWW Junior World Championships in Macon, France.

This semester, team members travel to Panama City, Panama, and Klippan, Sweden, in October for the Eduardo Campbell Cup and Klippan Cup. The team first competes on U.S. soil at the Bill Farrell Memorial International Nov. 11-13 in New York City.

The Greco-Roman program at NMU has produced Olympic bronze medalist Adam Wheeler, two-time World bronze medalist and two-time Olympian Justin Lester, two-time World bronze medalist Andy Bisek and two-time Olympians Spenser Mango and Ben Provisor.
