No. 8 Cornell edges No. 18 Oklahoma, 21-19 in Norman

NORMAN – The No. 18 Oklahoma wrestling team dropped a close contest to No. 8 Cornell, 21-19, on Sunday afternoon inside McCasland Field House. The dual marked the Sooners’ third over a top-15 opponent this season.
Oklahoma picked up five wins in the contest, including two bonus-point victories at 125 pounds and 157 pounds.
"I thought that the effort today was good for the most part,” OU head coach Lou Rosselli said. “It was a 5-5 split. We had some matches that we certainly could have won. At 133, that hurt us. Heavyweight hurt us, and the 149-pound match too. Those are matches that were all winnable. That's the way it goes, but I think that we're improving. I think that we're getting better. We've just got to keep doing better."
The dual started off at 165 pounds, as No. 8 Clark Glass earned his second consecutive win over a ranked opponent with a 3-1 decision over No. 20 Brandon Womack. Glass controlled the match, as Womack’s only points of the dual came from an escape to start the final period.
At 197 pounds, redshirt senior Brad Johnson, ranked No. 19, recorded a 5-3 decision in sudden victory one over Ben Honis. The bout was knotted at 3-3 at the end of regulation, but Johnson connected for a takedown in the extra period for OU’s second win of the match.
Christian Moody brought the fans in McCasland Field House to their feet, recording a win by fall in 1:38 over Cornell’s Noah Baughman in the 125-pound bout. Moody led 2-0 at the time of the fall, and the win marked the first dual win of his career.
"It was a big win for Christian,” Rosselli said. “I expected him to win today. The fall was really nice to see. He put him in a cradle, which was nice to see that he finished him at the time we needed it to get us back in the dual meet, so I'm excited for him. He wrestled really well, and he needs to just keep working hard."
In the 141-pound matchup, junior Mike Longo recorded a 5-4 decision over Cornell’s Will Koll. Longo held a 3-0 advantage through two frames, and Koll’s reversal and takedown in the third wasn’t enough to finish his rally as Longo held on for the win.
DaWaylon Barnes registered an 11-0 major decision over Kyle Simaz in the 157-pound bout to close out the dual. He led 2-0 after the opening frame, and tacked on an escape, a takedown and a point from a Simaz stall warning for a 6-0 lead through two. Simaz was hit with two more stall calls and Barnes added another escape and takedown for the bonus-point win.
Hayden Hansen lost by technical fall, 16-0, to No. 6 Brian Realbuto at 174 pounds, and at 184, No. 1 Gabe Dean recorded a win by fall in 1:36 over OU’s Andrew Dixon. At heavyweight, No. 12 Ross Larson lost to Craig Scott, 9-7.
At 133 pounds, Trae Blackwell led 4-2 but No. 17 Mark Grey recorded a last-second takedown and 4-point nearfall for an 8-5 decision win, and No. 13 Davion Jeffries dropped an 11-3 decision to Joey Galasso of Cornell at 149 pounds.
With the loss, the Sooners fell to 1-3 on the season. OU returns to the mat on Dec. 29-30 in Evanston, Ill., for the Midlands Championships. The Sooners are back in McCasland on Jan. 8 at 2 p.m. for a matchup with No. 5 Missouri.
