Oklahoma State and Penn State rank 1-2 in both WIN’s Team Dual Rankings and Tournament Power Index

Share:

by Mike Finn, WIN Magazine

NEWTON, Iowa — Coming off a weekend that saw Oklahoma State outscore Bedlam rival Oklahoma and Pitt by a combined score of 72-3, the Cowboys are ranked No. 1 in WIN’s first team dual rankings of the season and remain the team to beat in the Dec. 5, 2016 Tournament Power Index, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.

Just behind OSU — which is 4-0, has tallied 94 TPI points and features wrestlers ranked in all ten weight classes — is defending national champion Penn State, which defeated Lehigh last weekend, features nine ranked wrestlers and is rated second in both the team dual rankings with a 3-0 mark and with 87.5 TPI points.

The TPI is based on the schools’ wrestlers who are rated in WIN’s individual rankings, predicting possible All-American placement (top eight finishers per weight) in the 2017 NCAA Championships, which will be held March 16-18 in St. Louis.

WIN’s TPI point totals are broken down by the following individual rankings: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.

Also making a jump in the Tournament Power Index was Ohio State as the Buckeyes, fresh off a team championship at last weekend’s Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, have moved to No. 3 in the TPI with 86 points, followed by Iowa (83.5) and Virginia Tech (71.5).

Among the individual wrestlers, Michigan’s Logan Massa has moved up two spots to No. 2 at 165 pounds after the redshirt freshman defeated 2016 NCAA runner-up Isaac Jordan of Wisconsin at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite. Meanwhile, 18 new wrestlers appear in WIN rankings for the first time.
