Chaid, Tuck and Goldman among double champions at Veterans Nationals

LAS VEGAS, NEV. – There was an air of excitement in the South Point Arena among the 153 competitors in the 2015 Veterans Freestyle National Championships. The field proved fierce this year, with competitive action throughout Thursday’s event.
Returning double champion Michael Tuck of Missouri was victorious once again, winning championship titles in the Greco-Roman and freestyle tournaments.
Tuck defeated opponent Jeffrey Brewer in a best of three series at 58 kilograms in Division C, winning by technical fall in the first round and by injury default in the second round.
Tuck also won titles in both styles during the 2013 competitions.
Past Veterans World champions Dan Chaid and Jason Goldman became double champions after defeating their opponents in the finals.
Chaid performed an arm spin, taking down opponent Sherif Almiggabber of Maryland in the finals Division D 130 kg finals.
“I wrestled in the Greco [tournament] last night, and I was able to win that. That was a lot of fun. I’ve had a couple of good matches today, and so far it’s been good. I’ve wrestled here in Las Vegas since the early 80s when they started the first Las Vegas Invitational, and I wrestled in almost all of the Opens through 1996. So, I’ve wrestled here many, many times,” said Chaid.
Goldman went on to defeat Roger Stewart in the Division B 58 kg final with a technical fall, 13-2. His day consisted of a number of high action matches, including his second round win over Elliot Diaz.
“I’ve had some real competitive matches today. I just came off a real competitive match with Elliot Diaz of California. I pulled out a 6-4 match, stayed in a real good position, didn’t overcommit to stuff. I just kind of held back a little bit. I’ve wrestled the past couple of years at this event. I could tell he [Diaz] has definitely improved. He’s studied me a lot more, so I knew it was going to be a more competitive match,” said Goldman.
For Goldman, being able to compete at Veterans competitions is more than a chance to continue to wrestle. It is an extraordinary change to bond with other athletes who enjoy the sport just as much as he does.
“I love it. Being able to compete at the Veterans level for me, it’s turned into something I look forward to doing every year. I look at a lot of these veteran wrestlers like they’re my brothers. They’re an extended part of my family. I’ve competed in the World Championships these past couple years, and I’m going out to Athens, Greece this year. This is a great group of guys. Like I said, they’ve embraced me over the past few years I’ve done this. Coach Chris Brown that is on our team is here competing today. He’s a real good motivator, and he’s helped out the team. He’s really tried to draw in a lot of these guys and trying to get everybody on board. It’s great that the numbers are up this year. We have over 150 athletes competing this year, which is a record for us. It’s turned out to be a great event,” said Goldman.

I’ve wrestled here in Las Vegas since the early 80s when they started the first Las Vegas Invitational, and I wrestled in almost all of the Opens through 1996. So, I’ve wrestled here many, many times,” said Chaid.
Goldman went on to defeat Roger Stewart in the Division B 58 kg final with a technical fall, 13-2. His day consisted of a number of high action matches, including his second round win over Elliot Diaz.
“I’ve had some real competitive matches today. I just came off a real competitive match with Elliot Diaz of California. I pulled out a 6-4 match, stayed in a real good position, didn’t overcommit to stuff. I just kind of held back a little bit. I’ve wrestled the past couple of years at this event. I could tell he [Diaz] has definitely improved. He’s studied me a lot more, so I knew it was going to be a more competitive match,” said Goldman.
For Goldman, being able to compete at Veterans competitions is more than a chance to continue to wrestle. It is an extraordinary change to bond with other athletes who enjoy the sport just as much as he does.
“I love it. Being able to compete at the Veterans level for me, it’s turned into something I look forward to doing every year. I look at a lot of these veteran wrestlers like they’re my brothers. They’re an extended part of my family. I’ve competed in the World Championships these past couple years, and I’m going out to Athens, Greece this year. This is a great group of guys. Like I said, they’ve embraced me over the past few years I’ve done this. Coach Chris Brown that is on our team is here competing today. He’s a real good motivator, and he’s helped out the team. He’s really tried to draw in a lot of these guys and trying to get everybody on board. It’s great that the numbers are up this year. We have over 150 athletes competing this year, which is a record for us. It’s turned out to be a great event,” said Goldman.
