MADISON, Wis. – Jake Herbert is 30 years old.

But he looks as strong and as motivated as ever.

The 2009 World silver medalist outscored 2014 World Team member Ed Ruth by a combined score of 23-5 to sweep the U.S. World Team Trials freestyle finals on Saturday night at the Alliant Energy Center.

Herbert charged out aggressively to win by a 13-3 technical fall before following with a decisive 10-2 win at 86 kg/189 lbs. to make his third World Team.

Herbert previously made World Teams in 2009 and 2010 before making the 2012 Olympic Team. He had been away from competition since the London Olympics before returning to competition this season.

“I’ve had a lot of ups and downs and I’ve had some surgeries after the Olympics,” Herbert said. “You only have a short window to win the Olympics and I wanted to take advantage of this last opportunity.”

Herbert had beaten Ruth 13-11 en route to winning the U.S. Open last month in Las Vegas. He was just 4-4 this season before the Open.

“Ed is very talented and I wanted to wrestle him here,” Herbert said. “I’m a little bit bigger and stronger than him, and I came out and wrestled aggressively and got to his legs. I was surprised how easy I scored on him.”

Champions at the Trials advance to September’s World Championships in Las Vegas.

2014 World Team member Tony Ramos wrestled superbly in slowing down Joe Colon en route to sweeping their finals series at 57 kg/125.5 lbs.

Ramos rallied to beat Colon 6-4 in the U.S. Open semifinals.

“Fans want to see a good rivalry,” Ramos said. “I competed hard – nobody in America has beaten me yet. People might call it cocky, but I really don’t care what they say. I am ready to go to Vegas and win a medal.”

Two-time World bronze medalist Tervel Dlagnev won a tough three-match series over veteran Zach Rey in the finals at 125 kg/275 lbs.

Dlagnev came back for a 3-0 win in the decisive third match after Rey had won the second match to send the series to a third bout. Dlagnev made his fifth World Team.

“Zach came to wrestle and he was prepared,” Dlagnev said. “I’ve been battling through some stuff injury-wise. It’s been a frustrating road, but I’m super blessed to make this team. I’ve battled through a lot of adversity. Kudos to Zach for a great series.

“I’m looking forward to becoming a World champion on our home turf.”

2014 University World silver medalist James Green turned in a superb performance in sweeping 2009 World Team member Dustin Schlatter in the finals at 70 kg/154 lbs.

Green may have to wrestle U.S. Open champion Nick Marable at a later date to earn the World Team spot at 70 kilos.

Marable did not weigh in on Friday at 70 kilos. He has applied for a medical extension, in accordance with USA Wrestling World Team Trials procedures, in hopes of wrestling the Trials winner at a later date for a spot on the World Team. The Men’s Freestyle Sport Committee will hear that appeal and make a ruling early next week on Marable’s fate.
