Schwartz wins Triple Crown, Arujau named Outstanding Wrestler of Cadet Nationals freestyle finals

FARGO, N.D. – The champion at the lightest weight class made the biggest impact.
Colorado’s Mosha Schwartz was determined to win a coveted USA Wrestling Triple Crown and he did just that after capturing a Cadet Nationals freestyle title on Friday afternoon at the Fargo Dome.
Schwartz earned a hard-fought and exciting 11-8 win over a very strong opponent in Idaho’s Ridge Lovett in the 88-pound finals.
Schwartz raised both arms in celebration of his historic win.
Schwartz captured a Cadet Greco-Roman championship on Monday afternoon at the Fargo Dome. He also won a USAW Cadet Folkstyle Nationals title in April in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Schwartz came back from an 8-6 deficit to defeat Lovett, a past USA Wrestling Intermediate Triple Crown winner.
“I trained all year for this,” Schwartz said. “It’s really exciting to finally do it. I really wanted to win a Triple Crown. I trained three times a day for this and it showed.”
Colorado’s Malik Heinselman, Schwartz’s teammate at the Sons of Thunder Academy in Castle Rock, Colo., followed by capturing the 94-pound title. Heinselman downed Michigan’s Rayvon Foley 6-2 in the finals.
Heinselman repeated as Cadet freestyle champion in Fargo. Heinselman won a Cadet Greco title here on Monday. He made the U.S. Cadet World Team in freestyle this year.
Illinois captured the team title with Pennsylvania finishing second and New Jersey taking third.
Trevell Timmons of Illinois overcame an early 6-0 deficit to down Nevada’s Giullian Nakamatsu by a 16-6 technical fall in the 152 finals. Timmons hit a spectacular body lock en route to his impressive win.
Arizona’s Roman Bravo-Young repeated as a double Cadet champion in Fargo after defeating Pennsylvania’s Matthew Parker 11-4 in the finals at 113 pounds.
“It took a lot of hard work to get here,” Bravo-Young said. “I’m happy and excited to do it again.”
New York’s Vitali Arujau rolled to a quick 11-0 technical fall over Anthony Madrigal of Illinois in the 126-pound finals. Arujau’s father, Vougar, was a World freestyle champion for the Soviet Union.
Arujau was named Outstanding Wrestler.
“I didn’t want to underestimate anyone and I wanted to wrestle my match,” Arujau said. “I put a lot of time in for this and it paid off for me.”
Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman champions who also captured freestyle titles on Friday include Nick Raimo of New Jersey (120), Anthony Artalona of Florida (145), Jacob Warner of Illinois (170) and Nicholas Boykin of Tennessee (285).
Raimo pulled out a dramatic 15-13 win over Iowa’s Alex Thomsen in the 120-pound finals. With the score tied 10-10, Thomsen powered in on a double-leg shot before Raimo headlocked him to his back for a 14-10 lead. Thomsen rallied with a late flurry, but was unable to turn Raimo as time ran out.
“It was a great experience being up on that stage,” Raimo said. “I started a little slow, but I came on strong after that. I just had to keep wrestling hard.”
Artalona came back from an early deficit to defeat Oklahoma’s Jaryn Curry 11-4 in the 145 finals.
Warner defeated Illinois teammate Jack Jessen by a 15-4 technical fall in the finals at 170. Warner also beat Jessen in the Cadet Nationals Greco finals this week.
Boykin rolled to a 10-0 win over Zach Muller of Illinois in the heavyweight finals.
Cadet World Team member Dylan D’Emilio of Ohio held off Travis Ford-Melton of Illinois 5-4 in the finals at 100 pounds. D’Emilio placed second at Cadet Nationals in freestyle last year.
Ohio’s Jordan Decatur, D’Emilio’s teammate, put on impressive display with a 14-8 win over Oklahoma’s Billy Simpson in the 106-pound finals.
“It’s great to win this,” Decatur said. “And it’s great to win for Ohio. I knew I had to work hard to be the best. I got taken out of the rankings and I had a point to make.”
Cadet World Team member Gable Steveson of Minnesota continued his winning ways with a 14-4 win over Cadet Nationals Greco champion Cohlton Schultz of Colorado in the 220-pound finals.
Pennsylvania’s Sam Sasso earned a 4-1 win over Utah’s Brock Hardy in the 132-pound finals.
“It helps me improve as a wrestler competing on this stage,” Sasso said. “You just have to keep pushing and wrestling hard.”
Wisconsin’s Jacob Raschka came back from a 5-0 deficit to beat Michigan’s Brandon Whitman 6-5 in the finals at 182. Raschka is coached by Olympian and two-time NCAA champion Ben Askren.
Indiana’s Joe Lee won by a 10-0 technical fall over New Jersey’s Shane Griffith in the 138-pound finals.
New Jersey’s Ryan Karoly rallied to down Iowa’s Marcus Coleman 9-6 in the finals at 160. Coleman won a Cadet Folkstyle Nationals title this year.
Missouri’s Jake Boyd took control early with a 9-2 win over Pennsylvania’s Ian Malesiewski in the 195-pound finals.
