SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzogovina – Ronna Heaton became the first American medalist at the 2015 UWW Cadet World Championships.

And she did it in impressive fashion.

Heaton scored takedowns on counters in each period to defeat Japan’s Saki Igarishi 4-0 and win a Cadet World title in women’s freestyle wrestling on Thursday night.

Heaton ran around the mat carrying an American flag in celebration of her big win.

"I'm just really, really happy," Heaton said. "I'm still like in shock from the whole thing. I am just pumped. It was a really good day.

"I really wanted to win this."

Heaton, from Brookings, S.D., countered a leg attack midway through the first period and powered behind Igarishi for the first takedown.

Leading 2-0 midway through the second period, Heaton countered another leg attack and scooted behind Igarishi for a second takedown in the finals at 49 kg/108 lbs.

From there, Heaton stayed strong defensively and kept Igarishi at bay as time ran out.

Heaton got off to a fast start, stopping Esra Pul of Turkey 12-3 then defeating Anastasia Sizenko of Russia 10-6. In the semifinals, she fell behind Yevgenia Pavlova of Ukraine 4-0, but she came back to reverse Pavlova to her back and record a fall.

"I knew what they did," Heaton said of the girls she defeated Thursday. "I knew the Japanese girls were quick, and I knew how to handle that. But I wasn't intimidated by the countries they were from."

Heaton was a Fargo Junior champion this summer.

American Kayla Marano captured a bronze medal with a dominating 6-0 win over Italy’s Enrica Rinaldi at 65 kg/143 lbs.

Marano scored on a takedown, pushout and passivity point to grab a 4-0 lead at the break. She added a second-period takedown while controlling the ties against Rinaldi for the final margin.

Marano opened with a pair of shutout wins, stopping Siyka Ivanova of Bulgaria, 10-0 in the preliminaries, and Karina Moissevenko of Kazakhstan by a 3-0 margin in the quarterfinals. She was defeated 10-0 by France’s Koumba Larroque in the semifinals.

Marano, a Junior Nationals runner-up this summer, is the daughter of two-time Senior World champion Kristie Davis.

"They both wrestled how they act, honestly," U.S. coach Erin Vandiver said of Heaton and Marano. "Kayla is very disciplined and methodical. Ronna is kind of all over the place and creative. The girls set a good tone for tomorrow. Five more girls in the chute ready to go, and Kayla and Ronna showed them that it can be done."

American McKayla Campbell placed fifth at 43 kg/94.75 lbs.

Romania’s Stefania Priceputu came out quickly in earning a 12-2 technical fall over Campbell in the bronze-medal bout.

Campbell opened with a victory by pin over Mariana Dragutan of Moldova, but fell in the quarterfinals to Yubeka Tanabe of Japan. When Tanabe reached the finals, Cambpell was pulled back into repechage, where she defeated Nikoleta Molnar of Hungary by pin.

Campbell was a champion in both the Junior and Cadet divisions in Fargo this past summer.

Two other U.S. athletes competed on Thursday, but fell short of medal rounds.

At 56 kg/123.25 lbs., American Alexandria Liles opened with a pair of victories, stopping Krystsina Sazykina of Belarus 8-2 and Johanna Lindborg of Sweden 6-1. She fell 2-0 in the quarterfinals to Shabnam Ahmadova of Azerbaijan. When Ahmadova lost in the semifinals, Liles did not qualify for repechage.

American Jessica Rudick was pinned her first match at 38 kg/83.75 lbs. by Cansu Yilmaz of Turkey, and was eliminated when Yilmaz failed to reach the finals.

Flowrestling will have the archived videos of matches featuring the U.S. wrestlers.
