Mike Kelly wins two golds at Veterans Grappling Worlds in Russia

Mike Kelly (Hebron, Ill./Old School WC) won a gold medal at the UWW Veterans Grappling World Championships held in Moscow, Russia today. The event also included competition at the Schoolboy, Cadet and Junior levels.


Kelly was the lone entry in the 77 kg weight class for athletes who are 40-44 years old, and received the gold at that division.


He was allowed to move up one weight class to wrestle at 84 kg for those 40-44 years old, and also won the gold medal there. He finished with a 2-0 record, beating Elvis Guliyev of Azerbaijan, 5-1 and Valery Smirnov of Russia, 9-1.


Kelly has been a top star in USA Wrestling’s Senior-level Grappling program. In his career, Kelly has won six World Grappling medals for the United States, a silver and five bronzes. He earned a spot on the 2015 U.S. Grappling World Team which will compete in Antalya, Turkey in October.
