SALVADOR, Brazil – Two 2014 UWW Junior World medalists headline the first group of four U.S. women wrestlers, who have weighed in and received their draws for Thursday’s competition at the UWW Junior World Championships.
Thursday’s action features a pair of 2014 Junior World bronze medalists from the USA, Marina Doi, Kingsburg, Calif. (Titan Mercury WC) at 44 kg/97 lbs. and Kayla Miracle (Campbellsville, Ky./Sunkist Kids) at 59 kg/130 lbs. Both return at the same weight classes that they wrestled last summer in Croatia.
“We have two bronze medalist going first, and we are confident they will medal again,” said U.S. coach Archie Randall. “We are hoping with the two veterans wrestling with two young girls, that they will relax and perform.”
Doi opens against two-time European Junior silver medalist Ksenia Stankevich of Belarus. Doi is a past Cadet World champion, and has medalled in every age-group World Championships she has entered. She was a runner-up at the WCWA women’s college nationals as a freshman for King University in 2015.
“She is a money wrestler. She has been to these things and have conquered those things. The key to success is that she never stops wrestling. No matter the score, she does not stop wrestling. Last year, she won most of her matches coming from behind, upsetting people on the way to her bronze,” said Randall.
Miracle opens with Gizem Babak of Turkey. She was also a UWW Cadet World medalist. She was a WCWA women’s college nationals champion as a freshman for Campbellsville University.
“Kayla Miracle is a true veteran. She knows what to expect here and what she has to do,” said Randall.
Competing at 51 kg/112.25 is Oklahoma City signee Marizza Biruetta (Grandview, Wash./Gator OKCU RTC), who drew S. Cisem of Turkey in her opener. She will be competing at her first World-level event. She was the Tricia Saunders National High School Excellence Award winner and a Junior Nationals champion.
“Marizza Birrueta is really young. This will be an eye-opener for her. She is really talented. The good thing about her is that she can come back here two more times. We hopes she has a good effort here,” said Randall
Also in her first World tournament is King University star Forrest Molinari (Benicia, Calif./King University) at 67 kg/147.5 lbs., who opens against Alison Carrow of Canada.
“Forrest Molinari had a great camp, great training, and is great to work with. If she opens up her offense on her feet, she is almost unstoppable because of her length, her strength and her quickness. She can really do some damage here,” said Randall.
The coaches have confidence that this team can challenge for the team title.
“The group looks good right now. They are battle ready. They are ready to go. The waiting process kind of kills you. They are really talented ladies and are excited about being here. They want to wrestle. We are not concerned about draws. We will wrestle them one match at a time, wrestle hard in that match and try to score in that match,” said Randall.
