NCAA releases division I award leader standings

INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA has released the updated standings for the 2014 NCAA Most Dominant Wrestler Awards, in addition to standings for the most falls and tech falls within Division I. These awards will be presented in March at the NCAA Wrestling Championships. The standings only include matches between wrestlers in Division I.

There was no competition in Divisions II and III last week as those wrestlers begin national championship competition this weekend. The Division II and Division III Wrestling Championships are both March 14-15 in Cleveland, Ohio, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, respectively.


The Most Dominant Wrestler standings are calculated by adding the total number of points awarded through match results and dividing that number by the total number of matches wrestled. Points awarded per match are as follows:


*Fall, forfeit, injury default or DQ = 6 points (-6 points for a loss)

*Tech falls = 5 points (-5 points for a loss)

*Major decision = 4 points (-4 points for a loss)

*Decision = 3 points (-3 points for a loss)


This week a minimum of 18 matches are required to be eligible for the Most Dominant Wrestler standings. That required match total will increase by one per week until 18 matches is reached. Athletes redshirting the 2014 season are not eligible for any of the award standings.


In the Most Dominant standings, Big Ten champion David Taylor retains the top spot with an average of 5.1071 points at 165 pounds. Another champion in the Big Ten moves to second place with Ohio State 141-pounder Logan Stieber at 4.5833 points. Holding the third position is 184-pound Nittany Lion Edward Ruth with an average of 4.5714 points


For the first time this season, a new leader has emerged in the Division I fall standings with Bucknell heavyweight Joe Stolfi tying Indiana 157-pounder Taylor Walsh with 21 pins. Stolfi holds the slim lead with a 14-second advantage in the combined time of their pins (62:36-62:50) to be the national leader heading to Oklahoma City.


After conference tournament competition, the duo of Stieber and Northern Iowa 133-pounder Joe Colon added one tech fall each to sit at 10 entering the NCAA Wrestling Championships. Stieber’s advantage in time has him in the top spot by more than eight minutes (49:55-58:36).
