The Michigan wrestling community is getting an exciting new tournament opportunity this year. The Michigan USA Wrestling State Folkstyle Championships will be held in Fowlerville, Mich. on Sunday, February 16.

The event is open to ages 5 to 14, and the only requirement for eligibility to compete a current USA Wrestling membership. Age categories are: Fly, Bantam, Intermediate, Novice, Schoolboy, Cadet and High School (for those not in post-season).

Two-time U.S. World Team member and two-time NCAA champion Brent Metcalf and 2012 Olympian Jake Herbert are among the special guests there to meet with the athletes.

Metcalf will be conducting a wrestling clinic before the tournament, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. on Sunday.

Two very special stars from Mixed Martial Arts, who were former wrestling greats, will also be there: NCAA champion Phil “Mr. Wonderful” Davis from Penn State and Urijah “The California Kid” Faber, who was a wrestling star for UC-Davis.

“Brent Metcalf is a hometown hero from Davison, Michigan. We expect to have a very good crowd there just to see Brent. The other guests really add to the event, also,” said Ritch Roberts, MUSAW Folkstyle Director,

Roberts is proud of all the work that has gone into the planning of the Michigan USA State Folkstyle Championships and feels it is a good fit for the state and its wrestlers.

The event also has some other great opportunities for those who participate.

All Michigan MUSAW champions will be given free entrance into the Liberty Nationals Individuals/Team Duals event in St. Joseph, Mo. on February 22-23.

This will be the first leg of the Michigan Triple Crown. To win this coveted award, a wrestler must win the state title in Folkstyle, Freestyle and Greco-Roman all in the same year.

This is much more than a tournament. It also provides an opportunity to meet and interact with NCAA champions, Olympians and special guests from the UFC at autograph sessions. Don’t miss out!!!

Michigan USA Wrestling has been working hard to expand opportunity for wrestlers of all ages in the state. The new Folkstyle State Championships is part of an expanded schedule which will lead athletes into the freestyle and Greco-Roman season. The expansion of folkstyle programs encourages more members to participate in the Olympic styles, which strengthens Michigan USA Wrestling’s connection to the Olympic movement.

Michigan has a strong tradition of outstanding athletes and coaches within the Olympic movement. Examples include Olympic champions Steve Fraser and Kevin Jackson and World champion Zeke Jones. In addition to their great athletic careers, all became USA Wrestling National Coaches.

The one-day tournament will start at 10:00 am and end by 5:00 pm. The entry fee to compete is $15.00.

Admission is $3.00 for adults, $2.00 for children, and $7.00 for families.

The low entry fee and affordable ticket price, is just one way in which Michigan USA Wrestling has designed this event to be attractive for Michigan’s young wrestlers and their families.

“It’s about the kids, in all reality. It’s about the kids walking in and seeing the possibility of a state championship and winning a state title. The joy of winning a state title stays with you forever,” Roberts said. “This event is about preparing our kids for state championships and making it an enjoyable event for all the parents to come and see,” Roberts said.
