Minnesota, Virginia Tech each put three into CKLV Invite finals

The finals have been set for the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational for Saturday afternoon, after an exciting semifinals round.


Minnesota, which led going into day two of the tournament, has the most finalists with three. Finalists for Minnesota include Chris Dardanes (133), Dylan Ness (157) and Scott Schiller (197).


Virginia Tech joined the Gophers with three individual finalists, with semifinal wins by Joey Dance (125), Devin Carter (141) and Ty Walz (285).


Cornell, Michigan, Nebraska and Virginia placed two athletes in the finals.


Finalists for Cornell include Nahshon Garrett (125) and Chris Villalonga (149). Finalists for Michigan include Rossi Bruno (133) and Alec Pantaleo (149). Finalists for Nebraska include James Green (157) and Robert Kokesh (174). Finalists for Virginia include Nick Sulzer (165) and Blaise Butler (174)


One of the biggest semifinal upsets came at 174 pounds, when Blaise Butler of Virginia scored a takedown in sudden victory overtime to defeat No. 1 ranked Logan Storley of Minnesota, 9-7. Butler was unranked in the most recent W.I.N. individual rankings.


Another No. 1 ranked wrestler to fall was Cornell’s Gabe Dean, who fell to No. 11 ranked Taylor Meeks of Oregon State by a 4-3 margin.


A pair of returning NCAA champions have reached the finals, three-time NCAA champion Logan Stieber of Ohio State at 141 and returning heavyweight champion Nick Gwiazdowski of NC State.


The finals is set for 3:00 p.m. Pacific Time, and will be streamed live by Flowrestling.
